RV company planning Indiana factory expansions

A recreational vehicle maker is planning factory expansions in northern Indiana that could add more than 400 jobs in a county that was badly battered by that industry's collapse during the recession.

Mother arrested on neglect charge

July 16, 2012

An Indianapolis mother was arrested Sunday on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent after her unsupervised son almost drowned in a Lawrence swimming pool. According to police, Vonda Goodman, 28, left her 5-year-old daughter and 9-year-old son at the pool at Hunt Club Apartments in the 5400 block of Calder Way on Sunday afternoon. No lifeguard was on duty. Police say the boy had to be rescued from the deep end of the pool by another swimmer. The boy, his sister and two other siblings were placed in foster care.
 

Man shot to death on west side

July 16, 2012

A 31-year-old man was found shot to death Sunday night at a west-side Indianapolis intersection. Jimmidell Golden was pronounced dead at the scene about 10 p.m. He was found in a vehicle at West 12th Street and Medford Avenue. Police are seeking suspects.
 

Fishers, Brownsburg start water bans

July 16, 2012

Starting Monday morning, Fishers and Brownsburg joined the list of Indiana communities with water usage restrictions in effect. First-time violators in Fishers will receive a warning, while second-time offenders will be issued a $500 citation. Brownsburg residents may face a fine up to $300 for any violation. Both communities receive service from Citizens Water, which issued a mandatory watering ban in Marion County last Friday. As of 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Citizens said customer demand had declined 40 million gallons per day.

Retail sales fell 0.5 percent in June from May, the Commerce Department said Monday. Consumers spent less on autos, furniture, appliances, on building and garden supplies, and at department stores.

Indianapolis nears record for driest 45-day period

If the forecast for no rain on Monday holds up, the 45-day rainfall total would match a stretch in August and September 1908 that's the city's driest since the weather service started keeping records in the 1870s.

Fugitive ‘Outlaw’ surrenders to police

The last of 42 alleged gang members indicted by federal authorities is in custody after police said he turned himself in Friday morning. Terrell Lamont Adams, 28, was wanted on racketeering, drug and fraud charges. On Tuesday, investigators raided several locations tied to the Outlaw Motorcycle Club, serving warrants on alleged gang members. U.S. Attorney Joseph Hogsett said the raids were part of the largest organized crime investigation in Indiana history.

Motorcyclist dies after hit-and-run crash

July 13, 2012

Indianapolis police are looking for a driver who was involved in an accident that killed a motorcyclist traveling south on North Meridian Street late Thursday. Officers responded to the crash near 12th Street at about 9:30 p.m. Witnesses said a green Oldsmobile Delta ’88 turned into the unidentified motorcyclist’s path, triggering the accident. The vehicle may have damage on the passenger side, police said.

USDA declares state disaster areas

July 13, 2012

More than half of Indiana’s counties are considered natural disaster areas because of this summer’s drought, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Thursday. The designation allows farmers and ranchers in the 55 affected counties, mainly in the northern and southern portions of the state, to apply for low-interest federal emergency loans. The designated counties have been in a severe drought for at least eight weeks during the growing season. About 30 percent of the state is experiencing extreme drought.

BrightPoint settles two suits against rival Brightstar

July 13, 2012

Both lawsuits involved former BrightPoint executives hired by Brightstar who had access to the local firm’s innermost workings and strategies. The suits, filed in Marion Superior Court, were dismissed Wednesday.
