Local WellPoint unit eliminating 112 employees

National Government Services Inc., which processes Medicare and Medicaid claims for the federal government, attributed the job reductions to the loss of a government contract. The subsidiary will still have about 500 workers in Indianapolis.

Children’s Museum selects developer for Winona site

Local affordable housing developer The Whitsett Group has been chosen to redevelop the site on North Meridian Street. Its other major development is a $22 million project set for the former Keystone Towers site.

Truck fire closes I-65 lanes

May 23, 2012

All northbound Interstate 65 lanes in Boone County were closed late Wednesday morning after a semitrailer carrying hay caught fire. Emergency crews were dispatched at 10:30 a.m. to the site just north of Lebanon, near the 149-mile marker. Officials said they expected a lengthy cleanup.
 

Four injured in city house fire

May 23, 2012

Four people suffered smoke inhalation during a house fire early Wednesday morning in the 500 block of Hamilton Avenue on Indianapolis’ near-east side. Three people were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and another was taken to the hospital. The blaze broke out about 1 a.m. A cause was not immediately known.
 

School bus rams Carmel house

May 23, 2012

A school bus careened through a backyard and crashed into the side of a Carmel home about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. No students were aboard the bus when it crashed. Officials say the driver was alert and taken to a hospital for evaluation. Four family members were home at the time, but weren’t injured. The impact tore bricks and gutters off the side of the house in Tarkington Commons, near 131st Street and Gray Road. A cause for the crash wasn't immediately known.

State museum uncovers hidden Steele painting

The unusual find occurred when the museum, which boasts the largest collection of T.C. Steele paintings in the country, shipped one of the Hoosier artist’s works to be cleaned by a conservator. He said the 122-year-old hidden canvas he found underneath was like a “King Tut” discovery.

Indiana's largest school district is planning to lay off 163 workers, including 94 teachers, largely because of the state takeover of four schools starting this fall.

HHGregg’s profit jumps on life-insurance payout

The Indianapolis-based appliance and electronics retailer on Wednesday reported fiscal quarterly profit of $53.6 million, including $39.6 million from a life insurance policy the company took out on former executive chairman Jerry W. Throgmartin.

 The Children’s Museum once again teams up with Mattel, its partner on the popular Barbie exhibition, for another interactive celebration of an iconic toy line.
