IPS expels student over stun gun

A 17-year-old boy who said he took a stun gun to school to protect himself from bullies who tormented him because he was gay has been expelled. Indianapolis Public Schools issued a statement Tuesday confirming the expulsion of Darnell Young from Arsenal Technical High School through the fall semester. Young’s mother said she gave her son the stun gun because he was often bullied at school for wearing female apparel. IPS said in the statement that it offers anti-bullying programs and support through the Gay Straight Alliance, but has a no-tolerance policy regarding weapons.

Pacers-Magic game almost sold out

The Indiana Pacers box office expects to sell out the few dozen remaining tickets for Tuesday night’s Game 5 against the Orlando Magic by 5 p.m., two hours before game time. The Pacers lead the Magic 3-1 in the best-of-seven series and hope to close out their first NBA playoffs series victory since 2005. Most of the remaining tickets are single seats in the balcony of Bankers Life Fieldhouse. At last check, more than 400 tickets were available on StubHub, ranging in price from $18 for a balcony seat to $515 for courtside.

Man killed in west-side home invasion

Indianapolis police say a man was shot to death Tuesday morning during a home invasion on the west side. Mark Fuller, 43, died at the scene in the 3900 block of Kalmar Drive, near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, about 3:30 a.m. Detectives believe Fuller and his girlfriend were asleep when three males forced their way into the house, demanded money and shot Fuller. Two teenagers were also inside the home, but they escaped unharmed. Police are looking for suspects.

Purdue announces $33 million energy plan

Purdue University plans to demolish an old coal-burning boiler, convert another coal-burning boiler to natural gas and install a natural gas-fired combined heat and power unit as part of a new comprehensive energy plan.

Local election sites seeing light turnout

Marion County Clerk Beth White said she expects voter turnout for the Tuesday primary to be about 20 percent, much lower than the 37-percent participation in the 2008 primary. Without a presidential primary this time around, Democrats don’t feel as much urgency to vote, White said.

The average rate for 30-year mortgages fell from 4.09 percent to 4.05 percent in the week ended May 2, according to Bankrate.com. The rate for 15-year mortgages fell from 3.28 percent to 3.25 percent.

Police nab three car-theft suspects

Police in Boone County believe they have broken up a suspected car-theft ring that stole or broke into as many as 15 cars. Two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old were taken into custody Sunday morning after police responded to a report of a car theft in progress about 4:30 a.m. at the Royal Run subdivision in Zionsville. Police arrived in time to see the suspects driving away from the neighborhood. After a short chase, the suspects crashed the vehicle into a utility pole. Two of the suspects were immediately captured. A third fled the scene but was taken into custody several hours later.
 

Ex-PTA treasurer arrested for theft

A former elementary school Parent Teacher Association treasurer was arrested Friday after police said she stole thousands of dollars in school funds. Candace Cadwell, 34, was charged with one count of theft, a class D felony, after a four-month investigation by a state police task force. Cadwell is accused of stealing about $11,000 from Glenns Valley Elementary School in Perry Township in Indianapolis. The thefts occurred from June 2009 to June 2011. Due to the lost funds, the school had to cancel several annual student events.
 

Fire damages downtown apartments

An apartment building under renovation in downtown Indianapolis caught fire Monday morning, causing an estimated $200,000 in damage. Firefighters were dispatched to the 23-unit Burton Building Apartments at 821 N. Pennsylvania St. at 6:42 a.m. No injuries were reported. A cause is being investigated. Partners in Housing typically uses the building to house U.S. military veterans who are at risk of being homeless. The building was slated to be filled with residents again in a month after renovations.
