Zionsville school board votes for cuts
The Zionsville school board voted Monday to cut programs and lay off staff members in an effort to close a $2.5 million deficit in the school district’s general fund for the 2012-2013 school year. About 15 teachers were laid off, including elementary teachers and media specialists. Several programs also were eliminated: foreign language in middle school; band, orchestra and choir in fifth and sixth grades; and year-long art classes in the seventh and eighth grades. The teachers and programs may be restored if more funds are found. The district plans a referendum for more funding on the May 8 ballot.
Hospital locked down after threats
Threats made to a patient and staff prompted a lockdown at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital on Monday night. At the request of police, hospital security officials closed all but the emergency department about 10 p.m. and left it on lockdown for several hours. Charles Williams, 36, was taken into custody in connection with the threats Tuesday morning. Police said Williams called the hospital 200 times and threatened to kill people after family members and staff wouldn’t let him talk to his hospitalized father.
Two seriously injured in house fire
An Indianapolis man and his wife were hospitalized early Tuesday morning after suffering serious injuries in a fire in their northwest-side home. Dante Adams, 35, and Tehesha Patterson, 33, were taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital after escaping the blaze, which broke out about 2:45 a.m. in their house in the 4900 block of Victoria Road, near 50th Street and Kessler Boulevard North Drive. Five other people staying in the home, including four children, escaped without injury. The fire may have been started by a space heater.
