Six children under age 15 escaped safely from their home in the 2500 block of West Washington Street in Indianapolis as it went up in flames Wednesday night. One of the children was making chicken nuggets when a pan full of grease caught fire, starting the blaze. Neither parent was home. Authorities estimate about $100,000 worth of damage was done to the house, which is divided into apartments.
A man was killed in a crash on the east side of Indianapolis at 3:30 a.m. Thursday. The crash happened when a black 2000 Jeep eastbound on Washington Street crossed the center line and collided with a black 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo traveling west. The driver of the Monte Carlo, identified as 49-year-old John Eckles of Indianapolis, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Jeep was taken to Wishard Hospital in serious condition. Investigators suspect alcohol was involved.
