Truck driver escapes train crash

February 17, 2010

A semi-truck driver managed to escape injury by fleeing his stuck vehicle moments before a train plowed into it. The accident
happened Tuesday night in Hancock County on County Road 400 near State Road 67. The driver was hauling a load of wooden pallets
to a recycling facility nearby when the truck got stuck on the tracks. Weather conditions may have played a part in the crash.
 

Man shot, killed while in vehicle

A man was shot and killed in his car Tuesday night while stopping to talk to two men on the near-north side. The shooting
happened on 39th Street near Graceland Avenue. A female passenger said soon after the victim stopped his car, one of the men
on the street shot the driver in the chest, killing him. The vehicle rolled down 39th Street, struck a tree and a pole, and
almost hit a pedestrian before coming to rest. The passenger was not hurt, and the victim’s name has not been released.
 

SUV crashes into Red Cross Building

February 17, 2010

Police arrested a 30-year-old driver after he crashed his SUV into the headquarters of the American Red Cross of Greater
Indianapolis just after 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. Aaron Diemer of Avon, who suffered minor injuries, refused to allow medics to
draw his blood for alcohol testing. He was arrested for driving while intoxicated and for driving while suspended with a prior
conviction. Police say the SUV was going at least 70 mph when it traveled through a median, over a traffic-light control box
and into the empty building at 441 E. 10th St. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.
 

Cultural Trail snags $20.5 million stimulus boost

Sometimes authors’ names simply don’t register with readers. In fact,
it wasn’t until I started researching the performer who will be onstage at this Storytelling Arts event that I realized
Carmen Deedy is the author of “The Library Dragon,” a book I had read many times to my kids.

When Deedy
comes to town this weekend, though, the audience should primarily be adults. She’ll be telling “Stories for the
Journey Home,” which presumably concerns her Cuban roots, her emigration to the United States, and her dual heritage.
