Dr. Aisha Hashmat, a family medicine physician, has joined Community Physician Network in Anderson. She previously ran a family medicine practice on the south side of Indianapolis. Hashmat received her medical degree from Khyber Medical College at the University of Peshawar in Pakistan.

Dr. Daniel Kim, a neurosurgeon, has joined Community Physician Network, treating patients in Indianapolis and Anderson. Kim, a former attorney at the Indianapolis law firm Ice Miller LLP, received his medical degree from the Indiana Unviersity School of Medicine.

Steven Jones has been promoted to vice president of human resources for the Indiana University Health hospital system. An IU Health veteran for the past decade, Jones most recently served as executive director of talent management and diversity. Jones has a bachelor’s in economics from Wabash College.

Dr. Barbara Sturm, a dermatologist, has joined Franciscan Physician Network. She previously operated an independent practice, Dermatology of Stones Crossing, which was affiliated with Franciscan St. Francis Health. Sturm has a bachelor’s in biochemistry from Purdue University and a medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Man dies after drug arrest

A man died shortly after being taken into custody by Indianapolis police at about 8 p.m. Thursday near 22nd and Station streets, not far from Martin University. Police say Jeffery B. Lilly, 22, was a suspect in an undercover narcotics operation and took off running when they confronted him. Police used a stun gun on Lilly after a short foot pursuit. He became unresponsive and died shortly after being captured. Officers said the suspect, who has a long criminal history, may have consumed an unknown drug during the incident.
 

Suspect dies in police shooting

A suspected carjacker was shot to death by Indianapolis police early Friday on the south side. Police say they tracked down suspect Brent Walls, 21, at about 2:30 a.m. in an alley south of Garfield Park after he fired a shot though a car window during a failed carjacking in a driveway in the 2500 block of Shelby Street. Walls, police say, pointed a gun at an officer before being shot.

Two men shot at Lawrence hotel

August 9, 2013

A shooting just before 10 a.m. Friday at Park Terrace Motel near Pendleton Pike and Post Road in Lawrence left two men in critical condition. Indianapolis Public Schools 98 and 102 were put on lockdown for less than an hour after the incident. Police are talking to a person of interest.
 

Indiana joins push to allow public body prayers

The Indiana attorney general's office last week signed onto a friend-of-the-court brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to exempt public bodies from screening opening prayers for sectarian references.
