In a dark little corner of the tax code known as Section 132(f), the IRS lets employers provide tax-free benefits—typically, payroll deductions and/or subsidies—to employees for commuting costs. Indiana’s tax revenue down slightly in August

The Metropolitan Development Commission on Wednesday approved a resolution allowing the Capital Improvement Board of Marion County to sell the Ober Building in downtown Indianapolis to the Steak n Shake restaurant chain.

Public safety finalists emerge

September 5, 2012

Two candidates have emerged as favorites in efforts to name a new public safety director in Indianapolis. Mayor Greg Ballard’s search committee on Tuesday interviewed two candidates from Texas: Todd M. Keil, a former assistant secretary for infrastructure protection at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and Troy Riggs, the assistant city manager and former police chief of Corpus Christi. Local candidates include city fire chief Ryan Sanford and Homeland Security Chief Gary Coons. About 40 people applied for the job when former director Frank Straub announced his resignation in late April.

Man shot to death on north side

September 5, 2012

Indianapolis homicide detectives are investigating a fatal shooting on the city’s north side. Police arrived at the scene near the intersection of East 37th and North Oxford streets about 9 p.m. Tuesday to find the 20-year-old victim unresponsive and another man trying to revive him. Police are not releasing the victim’s name until family members can be notified. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.

Weather threatens golf spectators

Practice rounds for the BMW Championship in Carmel were temporarily delayed Wednesday morning after thunderstorms threatened the area. Crooked Stick Golf Club was evacuated and spectators were asked to return to their vehicles. A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued until 6 p.m. in central Indiana.

For the past three years, I’ve enthusiastically previewed this benefit for the Indianapolis City Ballet and, afterward, even more enthusiastically praised the amazing talent gathered from ballet companies around the world. Studio Theatre

 With great songs and unforgettable characters, “Gypsy” is about as good as musicals get. But it requires strong talent to pull off, which is probably why we don’t see it often. Here’s hoping the combination of the talented Actors Theatre of Indiana company and the intimate setting of the Studio Theatre at the Center for the Performing Arts will make this one a knockout for newcomers and fresh enough to thrill the hardcore musical theater fans it will no doubt attract.
