Pacers cool on IU’s Gordon

May 28, 2008

The Indiana Pacers won’t likely have a shot at Indiana’s Eric Gordon in next month’s National Basketball Association draft. Most hoops prognosticators project Gordon to go seventh or eighth in the June 26…

Local online sports broadcasters Jason Dozier and Robert Kendall have bought a radio station in North Carolina with a third partner, local businessman Rod Sheeks. May 28, 2008

Lebanon‘s city council has voted to send a nonbinding recommendation to the municipally owned utility that serves the city to stop offering Internet service. Lebanon Utilities anticipates losing $400,000 on the service this year and a total of $1.27 million by the end of 2010, according to the Lebanon Reporter. The utility’s board plans to […]

There’s something about Sarah

May 27, 2008

People are still fascinated with open-wheel racer Sarah Fisher despite the problems she’s had during the month of May in Indianapolis.

Actually, sports marketers think people might be fascinated with her because of the…

May 27, 2008

Federal-Mogul Corp., the Southfield, Mich., auto parts giant, plans to add as many as 50 employees at its lighting plant in the northeastern Indiana town of Avilla. The jobs will be part of a $6 million expansion. The plant now employs 120. The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered as much as $500,000 in tax credits […]

Duke gets rare analyst downgrade

May 27, 2008

Shares in Duke Realty Corp. slipped 5 cents, to $25.45, this morning after a Credit Suisse analyst downgraded the stock to “underperform” from “neutral.” Analyst Steve Benyik said the Indianapolis real estate investment trust faces “significant challenges” to lease its rental buildings. Duke also will struggle to contain general and administrative costs as development activity […]

On Sydney Pollack

May 27, 2008

The sad thing—well, one of the sad things—about the death of filmmaker Sydney Pollack yesterday is the nagging feeling that there should be more to be excited about on his directing resume.

Pollack, a native of Lafayette who grew up…

Bottle of milk cool at Indy

IU to create new 10-year IT plan

May 27, 2008

As Indiana University’s 10-year technology plan comes to an end, the school is preparing to launch another plan for the next decade. Brad Wheeler, IU’s vice president for information technology, will lead a 140-member team to develop the next technology plan by the end of the year, according to The Herald-Times in Bloomington. IU President […]

500 winners: Florence, Jim and us.

May 27, 2008

I’d like to add one brief A&E thought to all of this weekend’s Indy 500 coverage: Two of the reasons why it’s still possible to love the race–even if you aren’t an open-wheel racing fan–are Jim Nabors and Florence Henderson.

That…

May 27, 2008

Two Fort Wayne hospitals and a neurology center are launching a network to care for stroke victims, hoping to include as many as 30 facilities within 90 miles of the city. Parkview Health and Lutheran Health Network created the network with Fort Wayne Neurological Center, according to Greater Fort Wayne Business Weekly. Called StrokeCareNow, the […]

Analyzing Speedwayâ??s success

May 27, 2008

If you were at the track over the weekend or in the past few weeks, you made your way through Speedway,
an island of stability in a county where some other older communities, like Beech Grove, are slipping into
decay.

Speedway…

Not all feel need for ‘Speed Zone’: Speedway’s $500M redevelopment plan is catching criticism from town’s residents

May 26, 2008

Speedway may have been built on motorsports, but some residents think a $500 million redevelopment plan that would transform the small town into a year-round racing-themed destination goes too far. The plan, which involves 350 acres south of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, has become the issue in town at a time when a certain race usually dominates conversations. At the cozy Charlie Brown’s Pancake and Steak House on Main Street, patrons mull over the project in-between forkfuls of the diner’s signature…

VOICES FROM THE INDUSTRY: Projects require much work before ground is ever broken

May 26, 2008

Encouraging new development-residential and commercial-is such a high priority in many communities these days that one would think both the private and public sectors would rush to break ground before the impulse passes. But as ESPN college football analyst Lee Corso often responds each Saturday during the season to the observations of others, “Not so fast my friend.” Before construction actually starts, all parties involved in a proposed project, if it is to be successful, must reach consensus on a…

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: How an economist pays tribute on Memorial Day

May 26, 2008

Memorial Day held great significance for me when a youngster growing up in the 1960s. Like many families, mine had paid a dear price over the preceding century, and memories of those contributions lingered over even those of us too young to really understand. World War I veterans were still spry, and the World War II veterans were in the fullness of their years. To your future columnist, they were all old men. Still, Memorial Day had meaning beyond the…

RETURN ON TECHNOLOGY: Jump drives can rescue you or get you into trouble

May 26, 2008

I’ve seen a lot of computer oddities in my career, but a piece of sushi sticking out of the computer case was admittedly a new one. And then there was the squid, the Lego block, and the strawberry. They were all flash drives from a Japanese company called SolidAlliance (www.solidalliance.com). You can go to its site, but don’t expect to read it unless you’re fluent in Kanji. “Flash drive” is just one name for the little devices you plug into…

We got game-what’s next?: Super Bowl may require 10 times the personnel of Final Four

May 26, 2008

While landing another Super Bowl may be a long shot, local leaders clearly intend to show what Indianapolis is capable of accomplishing. “Our perspective is that this is a one-shot deal,” said local attorney Jack Swarbrick, who was part of a small contingency that traveled to Atlanta last week for the bid presentation to NFL owners. “But if we do this, and we do it well, the world will know we can do anything. If you’re thinking of Indianapolis hosting…

SPORTS: City’s Super Bowl score was decades in the making

May 26, 2008

Shoot, if I’d known city leaders were going to resurrect Dennis Hopper-Shooter, from my alltime favorite flick, “Hoosiers”- for the Super Bowl bid video, I would have suggested they also use Hickory High player Merle and paraphrase his memorable line: “Let’s win it for all the smaller NFL-designated market areas that never had a chance to get here.” Yes, we are the nation’s 13th-largest city. Thank you, UniGov. But in terms of market size, we’re 26th or so. Certainly not…
