INVESTING: Credit crunch touches off squabble over Libor rate

June 16, 2008

The accuracy of a key global interest rate has been under scrutiny since the credit market crisis surfaced last summer. The London-interbank-offered rate, known as Libor, is used to determine interest rates on more than $350 trillion in financial instruments around the world-note that was “t” for trillion. Many mortgages, fixed-income securities, consumer and corporate loans, and derivatives use Libor as a base rate when setting their interest rates. Libor is administered by the British Bankers Association, which once a…

SPORTS: Before ESPN, there was McKay and ‘Wide World’

June 16, 2008

It might be a bit over the top to say that a man I met only once and barely knew had a profound influence on my life, but that’s how I felt about Jim McKay. Thus, when I tuned in to view the Belmont Stakes on June 7 and the lead story was not of Big Brown’s (failed) bid for the Triple Crown but of Jim McKay’s passing at the age of 86, I admit I felt a sudden pang…

VIEWPOINT: In politics, age is more than a number

June 16, 2008

At the ripe age of 71, Sen. John McCain is poised to become the Republican nominee for president. Simply put, McCain is a senior. Years ago, we would’ve called him a senior citizen. If elected president, he would be 72 years old when taking office. While there is a minimum age of 35 to be elected president, there is no maximum. This raises the question: How old is too old to be a leader? Would a win for McCain be…

More manufacturing? Maybe Butler did it: University’s accelerator helps plants boost business

June 16, 2008

Ten years ago, Bob McAfee bought SaniServ, an 80-year-old Mooresville institution that pioneered the making of softserve ice cream machines for restaurants. Despite the manufacturer’s longevity, a handful of competitors-one of them much larger and two roughly the same size-had cut into market share, causing SaniServ’s annual revenue to stall at about $10 million. Determined to improve upon the figure, but unsure how to go about it, McAfee turned to the Butler Business Accelerator. The 2-year-old consultancy on the Butler…

hundreds of suppliers. Powerway laid off 14 employees and slashed salaries for many who remain after it learned of Chrysler’s
plans on June 6.

VOICES FROM THE INDUSTRY: Logistics still driving central Indiana industrial market

June 16, 2008

For the past 10-plus years, central Indiana has benefitted from growth in the distribution/logistics industry with hundreds of new jobs and millions of square feet of new facilities. We’ve seen massive facilities go up one right after another, often topping the square footage of our tallest downtown skyscrapers. In the past eight years alone, the square footage of central Indiana distribution centers has more than doubled from 20 million square feet to 51 million square feet. And we’re not just…

BEHIND THE NEWS: $18M nightmare continues for law firm on east side

June 16, 2008

When a Marion County jury two years ago issued an $18 million malpractice judgment against an east-side Indianapolis law firm, the figure was almost too large to believe. Surely this was the kind of zany jury verdict that an appeals court would swiftly overturn. No such luck. The Indiana Court of Appeals last month upheld the verdict against Fillenwarth Dennerline Groth & Towe. And now attorneys for the plaintiff, the Indiana Department of Insurance, are tightening the screws. They’re asking…

VOICES FROM THE INDUSTRY: There are Six Sigma options; Here’s a look at six of them

June 16, 2008

While many manufacturing companies are implementing Six Sigma for continuous process improvement, it may not be the most practical solution for every company. Smaller manufacturers can benefit from applying many of the tools found in the Six Sigma methodology, but on a more manageable scale for daily process improvement. While far from a complete list, the following six practical tools may be used by smaller companies who are motivated to continually streamline production and improve productivity: Key performance indicators Most…

FUNNY BUSINESS: A farewell to fairways: Why I’m retiring from golf

June 16, 2008

More than once I’ve been told that to get ahead in business, I need to play golf. Sorry. Not going to happen. Oh, it isn’t because I don’t like golf. Quite the contrary. I love golf. Golf, properly done, can be beautiful: the ballet of the swing; the crack of the driver against the teed ball; the drive rocketing away from the tee box, curving to the right and then drawing itself back onto the fairway; a laser-guided short iron…
