The cause of the fire was not immediately known. The company does embroidery work and printing at the facility.

Witness tracks down carjackers

June 29, 2011

A driver followed a group of alleged carjackers after witnessing them in the act early Wednesday in Lawrence. The witness told police he was in his vehicle at a stoplight at 79th Street and Sunnyside Road about 3 a.m. when a car pulled up behind another car and ran into its bumper. When the driver got out, two men stuck a gun in her face and took the car. The witness followed the two cars and called police, who tracked the vehicles to a neighborhood near 56th Street and Arlington Road. Officers arrested Sonny Jones, who is on parole for dealing cocaine and aggravated battery, and Jeremy Wiley, who has previous convictions for burglary. Police are seeking at least one other suspect.

June 29, 2011

Former Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi announced Wednesday that he's been cleared of disciplinary charges related to comments he made during two murder cases while he was prosecutor. Rock and Roll BBQ

June 29, 2011

July 1-3

Victory Field Parking Lot

As a courtesy to your neighbor, be careful how aggressively you clap your hands at this event. That’s because the BBQ sauce that no doubt has dripped or slid from your fistful of ribs may well still be attached to your hand when you applaud for the Charlie Daniels Band, Gin Blossoms, Little River Band, Loverboy and more, thus creating a high risk of said sauce flying toward a neighbor.

Another tip for this first-time event: Get there before 6 p.m. on Friday or before 2 p.m. on Saturday or Sunday and admission is free (but once in, you can’t leave and come back without paying). Details here.

“Camp Rock”

June 29, 2011

July 1-16

Athenaeum

OK, so maybe Disney’s “Camp Rock”—based on the Jonas Brothers-starring Disney Channel flick—can’t hold a musical candle to “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” the previous production by Bobdirex at the Athenaeum. Heck, maybe “Camp Rock” isn’t even in the league of Disney’s “High School Musical.” But since Starlite Musicals packed up many, many years ago, Indy has been hurting for summer musical fun.

While community theaters Footlite Musicals and Indianapolis Civic Theatre both offer high school and college talent opportunities to shine, Bobdirex gives some serious talent a chance to work professionally. The cast for “Camp Rock,” by the way, includes Beef & Boards regular Jessica Murphy and IU Theatre leading lady Brook Wood. Details here.

First Friday

June 29, 2011

July 1

Various locations

Space doesn’t allow me to tell you about every gallery opening happening this Friday, but I can say it’s certainly easier to hop from one to the other in July than it is in February. Here’s a starter list: Gallery 924, the Arts Council of Indianapolis’ space, features “Contemporary Figurative Work: Central Indiana Artists Explore the Human Figure.” Artists include Kyle Ragsdale and Tom Casalini. Meanwhile, the Harrison Center for the Arts offers a group furniture show “Formtionality.” Trek a little farther north, to Broad Ripple’s Indianapolis Art Center, for “Inside,” a showcase of works by prisoners in the Correctional Industrial Facility in Pendleton. Details here.

“Star Spangled Symphony”

June 29, 2011

July 1-4

Conner Prairie

There are two ways to enjoy Independence Day weekend at Conner Prairie—and those two ways can be fused together into one, long celebration (provided you keep yourself hydrated).

First, there’s Conner Prairie itself, where “Glorious Fourth” activities include a reading of the Declaration of Independence, a barn dance, and more. Then, in the evening, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra plays such favorites as the “1812 Overture” (with live artillery, of course) and “Stars and Stripes Forever” in its annual “Star Spangled Symphony” celebration.

For “Glorious Fourth” details, click here. For Symphony on the Prairie specifics, click here.
