Area under all-day tornado watch

May 25, 2011

A tornado watch is in effect for most of central Indiana until 7 p.m. Wednesday. The National Weather Service placed the area in the "moderate risk" category, with the primary threat being large hail and damaging winds as well as tornadoes. Thunderstorms are also possible Thursday and Thursday night, however, severe weather is not expected.

East-side shooting injures two

A shooting on the city's east side Monday left one person in critical condition and the other in serious condition. Someone driving a white pickup truck about 5 p.m. in the 2100 block of Yorkshire Road, near 21st Street and Post Road, parked the vehicle, got out and shot the two victims. The suspect then got back into the vehicle and drove off. The victims are expected to survive.

An Indianapolis man is under arrest, charged with tying up an 80-year-old woman and stealing her ATM card Sunday night in the 2100 block of Columbia Avenue on the city's east side. Police say 44-year-old Lee Miller, a homeless man, broke into the woman's home by cutting through a screen in her upstairs window. He forced her to give him her cell phone, ATM card, driver’s license, checkbook and car keys, police say. After he left, the woman was able to use a kitchen knife to cut herself free. She called 911 from a neighbor’s house, and police picked up Miller at a nearby ATM a short time later. He faces charges of robbery, criminal confinement and burglary.

Officer injured in police chase

An Indianapolis police officer was hospitalized Tuesday morning after crashing into a fellow officer’s cruiser while chasing a fleeing suspect. The crash occurred near 38th and Illinois streets. The injured officer was taken to Methodist Occupational Health after complaining of shoulder pain. The suspect ditched his vehicle and ran. Officers set up a perimeter in the neighborhood near Butler University and eventually apprehended the suspect.
