United Way chapters teaming to improve graduation rates

United Way of Central Indiana is joining other United Way chapters from across the country in an effort  to recruit 1 million volunteers to help improve high school graduation rates.

As part of the initiative, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard plans to participate in an online town hall-style education meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday to address the challenges of preparing children for success.

Joining Ballard in the discussion will be Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education; Melody Barnes, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council; Margaret Spellings, former U.S. Secretary of Education; and Alma Powell, co-chair of America’s Promise Alliance.

The meeting, hosted by United Way Worldwide and moderated by CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, will be streamed live on the Internet.

United Way of Central Indiana has set a goal to recruit more than 1,600 reading tutors, in addition to supporting the mentor-recruiting goals of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Star Fish Alliance and 100 Black Men.
