Indiana Republican Party Chairman Jeff Cardwell revealed the news to supporters Monday in an email about the dinner on June 18.
Pence – once considered a possible presidential candidate – had said he’d announce his campaign plans after the legislative session, which ended last month. But it had become increasingly clear that Pence would not enter the crowded Republican presidential field and instead seek a second term as governor.
“We are excited the governor will formally announce his plans to seek re-election during our annual Spring Dinner,” Cardwell said, “and we look forward to hearing his ideas for the future of our great state."
The dinner is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Primo Banquet Hall in Indianapolis. Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam is the keynote speaker.
The Indiana Constitution was amended in 1972 to allow governors to serve two consecutive terms in office. Since then, every governor who has sought a second term has earned one, except Democrat Joe Kernan who had ascended to the position after former Gov. Frank O’Bannon died in 2003.
