The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is looking for a new maestro.

CEO Simon Crookall announced to the symphony staff this afternoon that Music Director Mario Venzago would
not return for the 2009-10 season.

“We have been engaged in discussions to extend his contract for nearly a year, and it became clear that we
were not going to reach a satisfactory conclusion,” Crookall said in an e-mail.

Crookall said the board of directors supported his decision. It’s unclear how the musicians and classical
audience will react to the Swiss conductor’s departure after seven years.

Other conductors will take over for Venzago’s concerts in the upcoming season, Crookall said. The search for
a new music director will begin immediately.

Crookall’s
message also praised Venzago’s artistic contribution. “His interpretations of the great symphonies of Schumann, Brahms and
Beethoven have received critical acclaim and his partnership with the orchestra has delighted and entertained audiences.”
