Exactly why Indiana should do everything they can to get the Bears – no matter how long a shot. That area fundamentally has so much potential with its proximity and easy access to Chicago, the lake, Dunes lakeshore, South Bend, and ND, has essentially been left to rot. It could be a huge economic asset but it won’t without a massive economic shot in the arm and not many things could do that except maybe the Bears or a major airport.
While perhaps encouraging, a few phone calls are a far cry from real investment. And sport stadiums are not the paneca that people might think. Check out the blog “Field of Schemes” for more information.
It will be interesting to see (if the Legislature ever discloses) the food & beverage tax increase required to fund a $2 billion stadium. Lucas Oil Stadium – built almost 20 years ago now at 1/3 of that cost – required a 1% tax on about 1.8 million people with Marion county having a large convention business. Lake and Porter counties have about 700,000 people with limited visitors.
This is more of a ‘trend’ rather than an isolated incident. Santa Barbara is not San Francisco. New Jersey is not New York. The Chiefs are building a new stadium in Kansas, not Missouri.
