COVID-19 deaths continue to mount as state surpasses 400,000 cases

The Indiana State Department of Health on Thursday reported 96 new deaths due to COVID-19, bringing the cumulative total to 6,302.

The state has reported an increase of 556 deaths due to COVID-19 over the past seven days, an average of 79.4 per day. That’s up from 454 the previous week, an average of 648.6.

Indiana also reported 6,604 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the statewide cumulative total of cases to 404,935 during the pandemic. New cases have exceeded 5,000 in 28 of the past 30 daily reports.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 dipped from 3,244 on Tuesday to 3,221 on Wednesday.

The department said it tested 16,897 new individuals, the 44th straight day that testing in that category has exceeded 10,000.

The 7-day positivity rate for unique individuals decreased from 27.7% to 26.7%.

COVID-19 patients occupy 43.6% of the state’s intensive care beds. The state said 20.5% of its ICU beds are still available.
