  1. Having spent nearly everyday over hearing the quality of the instruction to my school aged children – I can’t say that I’m surprised. Nearly every one of their teachers was inept and just getting by. However, it’s ultimately up to every parent and child to ensure that they learn what they should, even if it involves self instruction or supplemental instruction.

    1. Absolutely. While it’s basically a cliché at this point to assert that colleges are adult daycare, the notion of the self-made individual becomes more important than ever when we face widespread institutional collapse, as we clearly do now. It may also help reassert the notion that higher ed should once again be an elite enterprise, available to everyone in theory but aptitude in high school should filter out all but, say, the top 10-15%. An environment where over 30% of adults have Bachelors degrees only dilutes the efficacy of college in general, to the point that we now have hundreds of thousands of young college grads whose greatest aspiration is to work at a coffee shop. So much wasted public investment. A four-year degree isn’t necessary to become an insurance agent or a HR administrator or a bookkeeper, let alone a barista or a produce manager at a grocery store.
