Data centers must pay for 100% of the costs of building extra capacity =- not one cent upon the ordinary ratepayers.
I think that is fair. I also like the “closed loop” water systems as it seems to have less impact.
The article provides no benefit to Decatur Township. If it is such a great idea have them pay property taxes.
These investments will usually pay some property taxes because abatement generally means a temporary reduction from the normal rate for a defined period (generally not forever).
Every time I read about proposed data centers and opposition to them, I see the data center representation coming off with facts, investment and benefits. The opposition has yet to make a valid argument with facts and data. It also looks like the opposition is not making its case to approving Boards and Commissions because those approving bodies would not approve development that is certifiably unsafe. My jury is out on data centers but the fact is, I have yet to hear valid reasoning backed by facts and data pertaining to why they are unsafe or should not be allowed. My ear is open.
I hear that these data centers are going to supply 100% of their own resources, but the data centers being built in Northern Indiana was going to use 1.5GWH of electricity. I used to work at IPL and when I would walk through the control room, ALL OF INDIANAPOLIS would be using 1.8GWH of electricity on an average spring day.
IPL had billions of dollars invested in power plants to make that happen. I don’t believe for a second, that these companies are going to be building new city sized power facilities. They are going to go to the open market and ask for people to sell them power and will be competing with every consumer in the state.
Any claim that the power consumption of these data centers will have no effect on me, as a retail customer are pure BS! Just look what happened to the American market for oil when supply couldn’t keep up with demand. Electricity will be the same thing.
IBJ, You need to be reporting on the power requirements for these data centers and not just the job creation. Power consumption is the real cost.
One thing no one talks about is that data centers are hiring Electricians specifically at $10.00/hour over their already nice pay scale. This is causing electricians to leave long standing companies to go work for them causing an employee vacuum for local electric companies. Not sure about the other trades, but I know its happening here. The remainder of their workforce for most is coming from Honduras.
