  1. The FCC statement reflects the complete opposite of what it purported to accomplish. Comparing print to electronic media in 2026 is like comparing the 18 month run of the Pony Express to railroads. Not unlike the Kremlin supporting Pravda and Izvestia. Fox 59 and WTTV already share at least half of their locally generated news stories. In spite of Gannett having a national monopoly, formally locally owned newspapers owned by Gannett ( The Star) have seen their operations drastically downsize. The Indpl’s Star’s former printing facility is now home to Andretti Racing. The Star is printed in Peoria, Illinois.

  2. This is just another step in the implementation of Project 2025, which is designed to turn our democratic republic into an authoritarian theocracy ruled by those who believe there is only one worthy religion, and all must follow that religion or be cast out. By controlling the media, people will no longer have access to fair and impartial news and truth will no longer be the standard by which journalism is practiced.

  3. If Nexstar and Tegna were non-partisan purveyors of the news, or God forbid liberal-leaning, this deal would not have been approved. We are losing an independent media that will skew their reporting to please the right-wing powers-to-be, at both the local, state, and national levels.

I guess no one knows that in 1787 Thomas Jefferson famously stated that if forced to choose between a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, he would prefer the latter, emphasizing the necessity of a free press over state structure to protect liberty. He believed informed, free citizens were the ultimate guardians of democracy.

  4. Along with the obvious “One report fits all” philosophy with same reporter on all 3 stations , this merger will negatively impact the ability of ad agencies to negotiate the best TV media schedules for their clients as buys will be “bundled” with all 3 network stations (13, 4, 59) – who have the largest viewing audiences. No longer will you be able to pit one station’s costs against another to get the best price. Instead, you’ll be forced into accepting lesser watched and cheaper programming to go along with the most popular and expensive shows.

  5. Previous comment writers make valid points; however, times have changed. In Indianapolis, in 1949, there were two television stations:
WTTV, Channel 4; WFBM Channel 6 (WRTV). McGraw-Hill sold to Scripps-Howard… communications like technology is constantly evolving.
