  1. So the Socialist Senator wants to allow communities to take over.teams if the owners want to move them across state lines.

Next he will want to do the same for major corporations. The slippery slope to socializing private industry

    1. It makes sense since the Socialist governor and state legislature of Indiana want to use taxpayer funds to finance a new stadium to entice a team owner to move a team across state lines.

If any professional sports team wants a new stadium, they should pay for it themselves, like any private business when it wants to acquire or build a new asset.

    2. Chris, Me thinks you may have failed gov’t civics classes. Socialism is when gov’t wants to dictate to private companies how to operate at the threat of taking them over for non-compliance. Think Cuba Venezuela. Businesses that want to move on for financial reasons is called Capitalism. Thank You For Your Attention To This Issue.

    3. Donald F. me thinks, you failed political discourse. Yes, we understand the political theory, but the term Socialism (or “Marxism”) is often used to refer to government welfare.

And, in the case of the proposed plan for the Bears to relocate to Indiana, one can argue it does involve a form of true Socialism (i.e. where the government owns the capital) since the plan involves the construction of a publicly owned and operated stadium.

  2. The Bears are willing to pay to build their stadium. They are wanting to make sure that where they build it that they will also have the proper infrastructure built by the state and that their property tax will be established at a set amount. These are not unreasonable requests when looking to build a $2 billion stadium that will be used for decades.

    1. Bears want the State/City to own the stadium to avoid property taxes. And Bears want rights to development around the stadium and generally those taxes are used to pay for the Stadium. So what’s the benefit to the State/City?

  3. Come on, Mike. You can’t go into a national conversation and let Bernie embarrass you like that…

Big Money Mike wants to keep spending Hoosier’s money on vanity projects while the “radical” is asking for “crazy” concepts like “not screwing your entire fanbase for a tax break”

  4. Conservative capitalist here who actually sympathizes with the spirit of Sanders’ bill. Giving a community (including its other private wealthy citizens) notice and an opportunity to purchase a professional team before it moves out of town is not a terrible idea. The problem, as always with Senator Sanders specifically and socialism generally, is in the details. Sanders’ bill, we learn, would “[a]llow a government, individual, nonprofit, private company or other organization to acquire the team during that year for a fair price.”

Fair price, huh? As determined by whom? in a free market, a fair price is what a willing seller and a willing buyer agree to. And a key point: “willing seller” means the seller is WILLING TO SELL. My strong hunch is that Senator Sanders has a very, very different concept of what “fair price” means and what happens if the owner doesn’t want to sell. Government coercion, after all, is his North Star.

  5. Mike J H, yes. That’s exactly the problem with Sanders’ proposal. “Right of first refusal” will in reality mean “Sell your team or else.”

  6. Bernie is a self admitted and self claimed socialist, but made his small fortune thru capitalism tactics of investments and book sales. Bernie just needed the media attention with this Bears hill. It will never be voted on or become law.
