  1. I was initially confused as to why this was illegal, because I thought Indiana campaign contributions were unlimited. They are for individual and PACs, but corporations could only contribute $5,000 to a state senator’s campaign in 2016. So they were illegally donating more company money than was allowed, and trying to pretend it was coming from individuals.

    What I still don’t understand: why wouldn’t the company just start its own PAC? My company has one, so I’m sure it’s legal. Wouldn’t that have gotten around all of this?

  2. Indiana does have a statutory limit of $5,000 on contributions by corporations, but if you read the decisions by the US Supreme Court, all state law limits on contributions are unconstitutional. So there is a big legal question about whether any contribution by a corporation, made directly or indirectly, was unlawful. It will be interesting to see how this develops. John Keeler is a smart attorney and knows when and how to raise the Qs. The Commission has the proverbial “can of worms” that must be addressed.
