Excellent news for males, who are figuring out that higher ed is a Ponzi scheme that leaves 21-year-olds broke and stupider than they were when they came in. They will enjoy considerable advantage by pursuing skilled trades. And for those who argue that trades will get replaced by robots, we have to remember that someone has to manufacture and service the robots–at a certain point “other robots” isn’t a credible escape clause. Some jobs simply require a skilled human eye/brain to spot and react to unusual contingencies.
It’s the same reasoning we can use as a safeguard that AI will never fully supplant all white-collar work. Maybe it’ll eventually get hard to sniff out something cranked out by AI…but right now, it’s still very easy. Human idiosyncrasies are absent and will remain that way even amidst AI’s capacity to “learn”. Unless, of course, the white collar employees abdicate all independent thought and reasoning, as colleges increasingly teach them to do. But at that point, will females have any advantage if they navigate through the workplace as though they are taught only to think and react in a certain way? They’ll become as unemployable as they are insufferable. And males, who caught wind of the rot sooner than females (understandably since higher ed is increasingly hostile to masculinity), will again have the remunerative upper hand.
“higher ed is a Ponzi scheme that leaves 21-year-olds broke and stupider than they were when they came in.” lmaooooooooooooooooooo
Lauren knows-it-all. Not.
Lauren: you’re spot on……….
What a shock, that white males don’t want to feed themselves into the beast that regards them as oppressors, the source of all problems.
they want you to pay their college loans off tho!
Fact: Despite many Americans doubting the value of a college degree, the household income gap between college graduates and high school graduates has widened, with college degree holders earning more than twice as much: $132,700 compared to $58,410.
The median lifetime return on a college education is 12.5%, beating long-term returns from stocks and bonds, according to research from the New York Federal Reserve.
While sticker prices for college are high, most students receive grant aid which makes college more affordable than some may assume.
MAGA leaders in Indiana do our younger males no favors by down=playing the value of a college education.
Is it also a fact, Brent, that those glaring earnings numbers are averages and not medians?
I mean, it’s not surprising to imagine that most of the eight- and nine-figure earners do indeed have a college education. But this simply means the distribution of earnings among college educated has a much, much higher standard deviation. Do their earnings skew toward eight and nine figures? Of course not. Most college educated people are likely to earn more in the range of $70K to $125K, and a median depiction would show this. Additionally, if we’re capturing all degrees from economics/chemistry to queer theory/critical studies, it doesn’t take a Ph D to figure out which degrees are going to yield salaries that lean heavily toward the low end of this scale…but their education costs are not going to be proportionally cheaper.
Meanwhile, the median earnings for non-college educated are probably lower than this $58K average as well, but since the standard deviation isn’t as extreme, the number isn’t skewed as dramatically: more like $40K to $75K.
So, bearing this in mind, what would the return be if not for grant aid, especially when, given interest rates and the expansive time frame over which students repay their loans, most students end up paying significantly more than the initial value of their loan?
All you do by promoting the myth that “college education = good” is deflating the value of what it means to have a degree. If corporate America expects admin assistants to have a Bachelors degree–and they often do (even though in 1980 such jobs didn’t even require a high school diploma)–then this deflation is going to reflect itself in reduced wages over time, putting the pressure for people to get more years of ed for diminishing wages.
Not saying college education is resolutely bad, but it’s not necessarily the doomsday that men are peeling away from unis, as long as they’re developing skills in trades that require less time, cost less, and lead to jobs with less wildly fluctuating pay expectations.
