Anne, “using the internet” is not the same thing as power-gobbling AI use. The only viable solution is a technological breakthrough in chip technology that can crunch AI search requests using much less power.
How about “no one understands why put legislators have deemed it worthy of massive tax incentives to locate here?”
The data centers are going to be built somewhere and this seems like an acceptable location. But, why the tax breaks. If they are having trouble getting locations approved, just the approval should be enough to incentivize this investment. The public is continually promised there will not be an impact on utility bill rates to support these projects, how is that enforced? Does IURC have the authority and ability to review that effectively or is new legislation needed to ensure the data centers pay for all of the costs of their utility usage including new infrastructure?
Very very few permanent jobs. Homeowners’ electric bills will double or triple. No idea how they’re going to source that much water.
Average Data Center has 40 or less Full Time Jobs – Not worth the Tax Breaks and Power drain.
The new NIMBY. Everyone wants to use the internet, but nobody wants the infrastructure to support it.
