    1. Im certain the league doesn’t look at population alone to determine if a city is a fit for an expansion. Has more to do with are there the right kinds of investors with deep enough pockets who want to bring a team to indy. The only reason I could see Indy not getting a team is because there’s several teams close by. Columbus, Nashville and Stls aren’t that much larger than Indy in metro size and yet they have hockey, NFL, baseball and soccer. Indy just doesn’t have MLB, Hockey or MLS.

  1. I can tell you with confidence that Indianapolis will never host an NHL franchise. Atlanta (which would be the third time for that city) & Houston are FAR and away their preference. As a 40-year plus fan of the game, the league’s top targets do not include our city. Love our city however. We would struggle with an AHL franchise. Happy to see our ECHL team grow in Fishers.

  2. Doesn’t Fort Wayne do better attendance-wise? Even back in the IHL days I have never seen the demand that an NHL team is going to require. And if Gainbridge can only fit 12k for hockey, I am sorry but this is not going to happen.

  3. I’m assuming the NHL is paying cities $2 Billion to take a franchise? Hockey has always been a red headed step child. I don’t think anyone local is going to pay $2 billion and then have to pay 1 to $2 Billion for a new arena and then pay to operate a team.

  4. Is Hogsett drunk again? Indy’s not large enough or growing fast enough for another major league sports franchise. Maybe MLS. But NHL and MLB not happening here.

And…how many NHL franchises should Atlanta be allowed to lose?! NHL would be crazy to try another team there. Haven’t they gotten the message yet that Atlanta isn’t a hockey town. Austin (maybe Houston) and some eastern city. And New Orleans not big enough either.

  5. NHL Hockey in Indianapolis would be fabulous for the city! It’s the best sport to watch in person; NHL is a different brand than the Fuel – so don’t judge by Fuel attendance. If we can fill Lucas Oil on a Sunday afternoon – for a game that is as fun to watch at home, we could certainly fill an NHL venue for the fastest-action sport there is. Between NHL vs MLS – NHL all the way! What excitement this could generate for the City of Indianapolis!

  6. I don’t think the fan base exists to support an NHL team. My kids played and I coached for 10 years so I would personally love it. But, realistically, I don’t think this would work – there’s not enough fans and/or corporate support. And Indy is less than 4 hours from 4 different NHL teams in each direction – Columbus, StL, Nashville and Chicago. Austin TX is interesting option given that city’s growth explosion and the only other pro game in town is MLS.
