I wish I could post pictures in the comments section. The project at 16th and the monon looks great and is going to be incredibly effective. Fingers crossed the cities follows through on its quick build promise and then works permanent solutions into its long term plans. 16th st is a prime candidate for a road diet
The city needs to just install attractive permanent barriers on streets like this. I’ve seen way too many people driving 20 to 30 miles per hour over the speed limit passing cars in these turn lanes.
East 10th Street and East 16th Street East of Emerson are both awful for people speeding down the center turn Lanes to pass everybody.

They did this in my neighborhood: painted a major thoroughfare’s street surface like a second-grade classroom, installed plastic poles and put up “New traffic pattern” signs for a few months. When winter came it all went away, leaving a tacky paint job on the street. They spent thousands of dollars and couldn’t be bothered to put in the characteristic white rectangles that indicate “crosswalk” the world over. I guess that was too obvious.
Hey Richard, could you share where this specific project was so that I can show you the data about how effect it was? If it was the E 10th street project, that one reduced crashes by 73% and will result in permanent upgrades to the infrastructure. These projects are effective and help communities build rapport and relationships with their neighbors, but you can whine about how they aren’t pretty enough if you want, I guess.
Richard, your neighborhood didn’t paint the crosswalks because the city does not allow neighborhoods to paint crosswalks. The city has some good reasons for not allowing it:
1. Crosswalks are required to be ADA accessible, with ramps for wheelchair users, and the textured bumps for low-vision and blind users. Painting a crosswalk that is not ADA accessible opens the city to a lawsuit. Who wants to pay lawyers when you could pay for street repair!
2. Crosswalks are “painted” with a preformed thermoplastic material, which requires specialized equipment and training. The material is applied at 400F!
Asking unpaid, untrained volunteers, to handle 400 deg material for a crosswalk that doesn’t pass legal muster is asinine.
