Could someone please explain to him the difference between a subsidy and a deficit? If Canada can extract oil and natural gas cheaper than the US, that’s a good thing because the US pays that lower price. (unless of course the US unnecessarily threatens them and those products are shipped elsewhere). However, if we want to eliminate a manufacturing deficit that takes time – manufacturers can’t simply flip a switch and start making components in the US. And farmers have to prepare – it takes time to plan and grow different crops, which is made even riskier because all the migrant workers are afraid to come to the US. This is dumb.

Where are the red state Republicans (Jim Banks, anyone?) whose constituents will feel far more than “some pain” simply because we live in a state than dwells in the bottom half of per capita income. I also suspect this is an experiment for imposing an economy wide national Sales TAX to change the federal income tax to a flat tax or to eliminate the income tax completely . Getting rid of the progressive income tax by imposing a regressive sales tax.
