If Marsh’s two downtown stores close, as the struggling grocer has warned could happen within two months, the locations likely would attract interest from rival supermarket operators.
Georgia-based Landmark Properties wants to build the project on a triangular surface lot along Indiana Avenue that it’s buying from a local developer.
Flaherty & Collins Properties already is selling a stake in its brand new downtown Axis at Block 400 apartment development to cover expensive cost overruns on the project.
When the new downtown Marsh grocery debuts later this month, it will give the local supermarket chain a lock on the urban core—at least until the arrival of another competitor expected with redevelopment of the Market Square Arena site.
The building owner is opening window coverings that had been sealed shut, a move that will make the property more attractive to a retailer. A huge apartment project underway nearby is giving the area a lift.
