One Call rings up regulatory ire: Carmel telecommmunications firm faces fines, legal action-and increased scrutiny from FCC

October 31, 2005

The Federal Communications Commission is threatening to revoke the operating authority of Carmel telecommunications firm One Call Communications for allegedly failing to remit millions of dollars in federal fees. In its second action against the firm since 2002, the agency also proposes a $1.1 million fine against One Call and parent OCMC Inc. The FCC complaint quietly launched in August comes after allegations made last spring by state regulators. The state allegations involved so-called “modem hijacking” of dial-up computer users,…

September 26, 2005

But her connection to the grocery runs deeper. Debbie died in June 2004 at age 52, following a prolonged battle with breast cancer. In her memory, husband Mike Davis created the “Debbie’s Make You Smile Fund” to benefit the Indiana University Cancer Center. It is supported by the sale of the…

Carmel Central Park project keeping contractors busy: $55M project on Monon won’t open until 2007

March 28, 2005

There won’t be skyscrapers, horsedrawn carriages or a subway stop, but come 2007, Carmel will have its very own Central Park. Officials broke ground in November on the 161-acre site bordered by College Avenue, 116th Street, Westfield Avenue and 111th Street. When completed, Central Park will be the largest in the Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation 280-acre system. The $55 million project isn’t anywhere near the scope of the New York City original, but construction manager Geupel DeMars Hagerman still…

Locally based Meridian Asset Development has the café building and a surrounding 2-1/2-acre lot at 11450 N. Meridian St. under contract. The seller is an Omaha, Neb.-based trust that owns it and a nearby office building. If the sale closes as expected in the coming weeks, Meridian Asset plans to raze the…

ADESA pushes virtual business: Carmel firm expands Internet car auctions

January 3, 2005

As rituals go, bidders at wholesale auto auctions have a lot in common with scouts for baseball teams who troll the fields for prospects. These old salts of their trades often can be spotted in baseball caps that cast a shadow over droopy-but-keen eyes. A toothpick twitching in the corner of the mouth belies a mind focused intently on its prospect-whether it’s a pitcher on the diamond or a Pontiac puttering down an auction lane. “You pick up paint damage,…
