Indy expecting first snowfall

December’s first big storm is expected to arrive Thursday evening, bringing the season’s first real accumulation of snow. Central Indiana should expect 1 inch to 3 inches by Friday morning. Heavier snow is expected north of Indianapolis.
 

Fishers police nab robbery suspect

December 20, 2012

Fishers police have arrested a man they say was involved in the robbery of a local jewelry store. Dwayne Pope, 19, was preliminarily charged with robbery, two counts of criminal confinement and theft. Police said Pope and an unidentified man robbed the Jewelry Gallery Store at 116th Street and Allisonville Road on June 11. The gunmen tied up the employees during the robbery.
 

Indianapolis man convicted of rape

December 20, 2012

A man arrested for attacking an Indianapolis woman in September 2011 as she was loading her car for a trip to the airport was convicted of numerous felonies Wednesday. Vincent Smith, 25, was convicted of rape, two counts of criminal confinement and one count each of criminal deviate conduct, auto theft and attempted robbery. Smith, who represented himself, faces a separate trial on charges that he stabbed an 18-year-old woman multiple times before setting her west-side house on fire in August 2011.

Howard Gwinn worked as a teacher and a Chicago-based pharmacist before opening shop at Fifth Street and Madison Avenue in Anderson in 1932. The drugstore he founded was a neighborhood fixture until closing Wednesday night.

Indiana to receive nearly $793K in Amgen settlement

Amgen Inc. has agreed to pay Indiana nearly $793,000 as part of a larger settlement to resolve allegations it paid kickbacks to physicians who prescribed some of its drugs for unapproved uses.

Digital marketer Raidious to add up to 75 downtown jobs

The company, which currently has 20 Indianapolis employees, began its expansion this fall by leasing 2,800 square feet of office space in the Morrison Opera House, 47 S. Meridian St.

Scotty’s plans new restaurants, loses contracts on others

Scott Wise, who operates nine restaurants in Indiana, plans to open two more Scotty’s Brewhouses in Indiana next year. However, his company also is losing the management contracts on two restaurants that carry the Scotty’s name.

Feds criticize Indiana education program for migrant children

Judge: Indiana districts can sell schools despite law

A judge has ruled that two northeastern Indiana school districts can sell vacant schools, bypassing a state law requiring them to wait four years in case a charter school wanted to claim the buildings.

Pence to name state’s top cop

Gov.-elect Mike Pence is expected to name a former Hamilton County sheriff as the new superintendent of the Indiana State Police on Wednesday afternoon. Sources say Doug Carter will be announced in a ceremony at the statehouse. Carter served two terms as Hamilton County’s sheriff and was a trooper at the Pendleton state police post.
 

Shooting leaves two injured

Two people were shot Tuesday night on the northeast side of Indianapolis, leaving one victim in critical condition and the other in serious condition. The shootings happened about 7 p.m. in the 3000 block of Adams Street, near East 30th Street and North Sherman Drive. Police are investigating.
 

Pedestrian killed in Fountain Square

December 19, 2012

A man rushing to the airport in his van Tuesday night missed his turn and hit two pedestrians on the sidewalk, killing one. Joseph Anthony Scott Crandall, 20, was driving south on Shelby Street in Fountain Square about 8:30 p.m. when he tried to turn onto Prospect Street and jumped a curb. One pedestrian died on the scene. The other, Aaron Schaler, 35, was taken to Wishard Hospital in stable condition. Investigators don’t believe drugs or alcohol played a factor, but said Crandall told them he was in a hurry because he had eight minutes to get to the airport.
 

GM to buy back 200M shares as part of government exit

The Treasury plans to sell its remaining stake in General Motors over the next 15 months, allowing the automaker to shed the stigma of being partly owned by the U.S. government.
