Eccentricity is nothing unusual in contemporary vocalists, but Florence Welch combines ethereal off-beatness with solid musicianship and a memorable voice. It’s great when a film festival can end with a bang. And the Indianapolis International Film Festival does just that with a screening of the very funny, very original comedy “Somebody Up There Likes Me” (not to be confused with the boxing film of the same name). This one concerns a young man … well, not always a young man since it covers 35 years of his life … although the character never ages … well, the actor doesn’t … and, well, you’re better off just seeing this one for yourself. Police arrested a Noblesville mother Monday afternoon for allegedly leaving her 11-month-old daughter alone in a sweltering hot car while she shopped. Pooja Thakkar, 31, was arrested on a preliminary charge of child neglect. Police say a witness noticed the child in the rear passenger seat of the car outside Bed, Bath & Beyond and called 911 just before 2 p.m., when the temperature was 95 degrees. The girl was treated and released to her father’s custody.
A vacant house on the city's east side was destroyed early Tuesday morning by a fire that also damaged two neighboring homes. A 4-year-old girl who lived across from the homes in the 3300 block of East Vermont Street was woken by the blaze about 3:30 a.m. and alerted her father, who called 911. Two firefighters were treated for minor burns. Damage to the three buildings was estimated at $57,000.
Two residents escaped a fire that heavily damaged their home on the southwest side of Indianapolis late Monday night. Firefighters were called to the blaze in the 3500 block of West Farnsworth Street about 11:15 p.m. A male resident was able to alert his sleeping wife in time for both of them to escape the fire. He suffered minor injuries. Fire officials say most of the occupants' possessions were ruined by the fire.
