Man living in barn dies in fire

April 8, 2010

Fire investigators have identified the victim in a Thursday morning fire as Joseph Woodruff. Investigators say he was living
in a barn behind the family home on Pendleton Pike in Lawrence. A 911 call for help came in just before 7 a.m. and firefighters
were on the scene minutes later. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

 

Father in custody after family attacked

April 8, 2010

An east-side Indianapolis father turned himself in after his two daughters and wife were attacked late Wednesday night. Keith
Hone, 41, was arrested for attempted murder. Investigators say a 17-year-old girl ran out of the North Harbison Avenue home
with a knife in her back and went to a neighbor’s house. The teen’s 15-year-old sister and 36-year-old mother,
who were beaten, followed behind. All three were taken to the hospital in stable condition. Fox59 will have more at 4 p.m.

 

Steak n Shake CEO woos investors in New York City

Steak n Shake Co. doesn't operate a single restaurant in New York City, where it is hosting its annual meeting Thursday.
But the world financial capital is chock full of high-profile investors intrigued by Steak n Shake CEO Sardar Biglari's
plans to harvest cash from the 485-location restaurant chain and deploy it on other investments.

Catholic schools get final OK to become charters

The City-County Council gave its official blessing to two Catholic schools in poor neighborhoods converting into secular charters;
they will receive new names by fall.

New jobless claims increase unexpectedly

The Labor Department said Thursday that first-time claims increased by 18,000 in the week ending April 3, to a seasonally
adjusted 460,000.

Dawn Food closing 160-worker bakery in Crown Point

April 8, 2010

Dawn Food Products Inc. says the northwest Indiana bakery will close in phases until being shut down by the end of August.
The Jackson, Mich.-based company says it decided to close the bakery to increase efficiency and that it would expand operations
elsewhere.

Indiana high court hears casino card-counting case

An Indianapolis man sued the Grand Victoria Casino and Resort after it banned him from the blackjack table in 2006. The casino
won the suit, but the state appeals court reversed that decision. The casino asked the high court to weigh in.

Bus routes to link 30 cities

The partnership called Hoosier Ride is helped by a $2 million federal grant and will operate at least one trip daily in each
direction using Miller charters along four routes running between Indianapolis and Evansville, Muncie, Seymour and Kalamazoo,

Storage-center thefts hit 200 units

April 7, 2010

Indianapolis police are investigating a number of burglaries at storage centers in Indianapolis. About 200 units have been
burglarized. The latest happened overnight at the Public Storage facility at West 86th Street and Georgetown Road. Thieves
have also hit Public Storage facilities on East 62nd Street, Pike Plaza and Shore Terrace Drive. Investigators are reviewing
security videos.
 

Children escape SUV’s crash into home

April 7, 2010

A sport-utility vehicle slammed into a home on the northeast side early Wednesday morning, plowing through a wall directly
under a second-story bedroom where the homeowner's two daughters were sleeping. The girls, ages 12 and 15, were not hurt.
The crash happened just after midnight near 62nd and North Olney streets. The driver, 21-year-old Emily Salas, said she swerved
to avoid something in the road and overcorrected. Salas and one of her passengers suffered minor injuries. Fox59 will have
more at 4 p.m.
