Education leader resigns after arrest

The former superintendent of Franklin Township Schools resigned from his new job after his arrest on a drunken driving charge. Walter Bourke retired from Franklin Township earlier this year and accepted a job as the executive director of the Indiana Association of Public School Superintendents. Bourke was in Kendallville on Oct. 21 when police said he rear-ended a vehicle at a stoplight. His blood-alcohol content tested at 0.24 percent, police said. Bourke previously worked at Mt. Vernon Community School Corp. and for Lawrence Township Schools.

Colts avoid Sunday TV blackout

The Indianapolis Colts have officially sold out Sunday’s home game against the Miami Dolphins, avoiding a television blackout, the team announced Tuesday morning. The kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in a key American Football Conference matchup against the Dolphins, who also come into the game with a 4-3 record. Tickets remain available for the Colts’ remaining home games against Buffalo, Tennessee and Houston.

Sandy stranding bus travelers, too

Airport travelers aren’t the only ones feeling the impact of Superstorm Sandy. About 30 Greyhound passengers on their way to the East Coast were left stranded Monday night after the bus line suspended service to many areas hit by the storm. The Red Cross set up a shelter for those passengers. More than 70 flights at the Indianapolis airport were canceled Monday and dozens more were canceled by Tuesday morning.

Survey shows dissatisfaction with Indianapolis Public Schools

A slight majority of more than 7,000 residents in the Indianapolis Public Schools district are dissatisfied with the school system, according to surveys conducted in late summer by a coalition of community groups, including IPS itself.
