Gunshot victim found on northwest side

December 1, 2011

A dead man was found at about 1:50 a.m. Thursday outside a BP gas station on the northwest side of Indianapolis, a victim of a gunshot wound. Joseph Clark, 26, was in the front passenger seat of a Cadillac Escalade near 38th Street and High School Road. Police said the motive for the shooting is unclear and they are investigating.

Two arrested on sex charges

December 1, 2011

A Johnson County woman and man were arrested Wednesday on several sex-crime charges involving a 15-year-old girl. Paul Hewitt, 81, was charged with sexual misconduct with a minor, a Class B felony. Hewitt paid the $20,000 bond and is no longer incarcerated. April Preston, 38, was charged with promoting prostitution and aiding in the commission of sexual misconduct with a minor. Both charges are Class B felonies. Preston is being held on a $40,000 bond. Police said the girl and Preston were paid to perform sexual acts on Hewitt.

Firefighter denies molestation charges

The firefighter brother of Anderson Mayor Kris Ockomon denied any wrongdoing after he was charged with six counts of child molestation, sexual misconduct and criminal deviate conduct. Martin Ockomon, 46, was arrested Tuesday and later posted bond. The allegations date back 21 years, and special prosecutor Tammy Napier of Hancock County alleges a possible cover-up by another brother, Roger Ockomon, a retired Anderson police officer. Martin Ockomon is accused of fondling and molesting at least three young female relatives on numerous occasions during the 1990s. His attorney denied the charges.
 

UPDATE: Dow leaps 490 points on moves by world banks

Central banks around the world worked Wednesday to give banks easier access to dollars, jolting stock markets and easing fears of a global credit crisis. The Dow Jones industrial average had its biggest daily gain since March 2009.

Fire destroys warehouse, motorcycles

A warehouse fire Wednesday morning in Lawrence heavily damaged a building and about 75 motorcycles stored inside. The blaze, at 46th Street and Franklin Road, started about 1 a.m. The building, which housed a motorcycle repair shop, is one of the oldest buildings in Lawrence. Fire officials said the structure likely will need to be torn down.
 

Man injured when plow hits train

November 30, 2011

A man was injured Wednesday morning in an accident involving a train and a snow plow in Hendricks County. Police said the snow plow was traveling north on County Road 151, west of Lizton. Plow driver Richard Layman, 65, of Danville slowed at a railroad crossing but did not stop, police said, and ran into a train traveling about 45 mph. Layman was taken to St. Vincent Hospital on a medical helicopter to treat leg and arm injuries. County Road 151 was closed following the accident.
