Browning to build warehouse for Markey’s Audio Visual:

May 26, 2008

Indianapolis-based Browning Investments Inc. will build a 30,000-square-foot office/warehouse for Markey’s Audio Visual in the Keystone Enterprise Park, boosting the park’s occupancy to about 90 percent. That’s a huge milestone for the 62-acre development, which sits in the blighted Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood, say officials with Browning and the city of Indianapolis. Keystone Enterprise Park, near Interstate 70 and Keystone Avenue, is a city-led venture launched to bring jobs and private investment to the near-northeast side. The goal was 600 jobs; more…

Central Canal might get floating stage

May 26, 2008

A floating stage for concerts and a submarine memorial are in the works for Indianapolis’ Central Canal, adding to the downtown
waterway’s growing base of attractions. Efforts to develop a one-acre site at the heart of the canal, meanwhile, remain stalled.

Builders relying on medical projects: Amid general slowdown, health care sector busy

May 26, 2008

There’s no shortage of research pointing to the growth in the health care industry. For example, health care expenditures will account for nearly a quarter of the gross domestic product by 2020. Consumers are increasing the number of times they visit the doctor, and the increase is even greater for baby boomers. The number of medical procedures being performed on an outpatient basis rises yearly. And jobs in the industry will grow 20 percent by 2016. To meet those demands,…

A&E: Welcome lace fans

May 26, 2008

Hear the word “lace” and you’d be justified in thinking of such terms as “delicate,” “elegant” or, if you were in a whimsical mood, even “doily-esque.” Hear “knitting” and you are likely to imagine a grandmotherly woman working on a shawl. That assumes, of course, that you haven’t already been to the Indiana State Museum to see the new exhibit “Radical Lace & Subversive Knitting.” Hear those words after visiting and you’re likely to have other ideas. The exhibition, organized…

Ring maker remakes industry with big buyout: Herff Jones’ purchase of American Achievement to narrow roster of rivals to two; deal may be worth $700M

May 26, 2008

Herff Jones Inc.’s latest acquisition is a whopper that will remake the competitive dynamics of its niche industry-the sale of high school rings, yearbooks and other products that help mark educational milestones. The Indianapolis-based company this month agreed to buy American Achievement Group Holding Corp., a deal that would reduce the roster of Herff’s major competitors from three to two. Herff has $511 million in annual revenue, while American Achievement has $315 million. Terms were not disclosed, but Dow Jones’…

Revival in nuclear energy puts engineers in demand: Purdue concerned about possible shortage in field

May 26, 2008

A renewed interest in nuclear energy coming at the same time aging workers are leaving the industry has created the elements for a shortage of nuclear engineers. Nuclear energy as an electricity source is enjoying a resurgence nearly 30 years after a reactor meltdown at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania severely tarnished the industry’s image. Escalating oil prices and stiffening environmental regulations on coal-based systems are helping to spawn the rebirth of nuclear technology. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in…

EYE ON THE PIE: Globalization in the fast-food business

May 26, 2008

My buddy Andy hates his name. He suffers because his parents were excessively influenced by “Wheel of Fortune” and named him Andreas Fawlty Towers. After years of teasing, Andy now hates just about everything. For example, he and I were having lunch at the redesigned “Steak, Shake and Sushi” as he complained about the new menu. “Foreign foods,” he said, groaning. “They take a perfectly fine menu of American classics and add something no one ought to eat. It’s bad…

Suit filed over NCAA Final Four tickets

May 23, 2008

An Arizona man yesterday filed a class-action lawsuit against the NCAA over its practice of not refunding the $6 handling fee for lottery applications for tickets to Final Four games. In his suit in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, Tom George asks that the NCAA to end the “illegal gambling” practice for men’s hockey […]
