Amerigroup Corp. officials agreed to delay a shareholder vote on WellPoint Inc.’s $4.9 billion buyout offer to resolve investors’ claims they were being shortchanged in the deal, the company said in a securities filing.

Indianapolis Business Journal convened a panel of experts at its Health Care & Benefits Power Breakfast on Sept. 28 to talk about industry issues including Medicaid, on-site health clinics and narrow networks. Panelists included Robert J. Brody, president and CEO of Franciscan St. Francis Health; Michael N. Heaton, partner, Katz Sapper & Miller; Dr. Gregory N. Larkin, commissioner, Indiana State Department of Health; Vicki F. Perry, president, CEO, Advantage Health Solutions Inc.; Dr. Ram Yeleti, president, Community Physician Network. The following is the unedited transcript of the discussion.

Man found beaten on Monon Trail

October 2, 2012

A 64-year-old bicyclist was hospitalized after being beaten on the Monon Trail over the weekend. James Knapp was found bleeding from his head, arm and leg on the trail near 21st Street and Winthrop Avenue on the city's near-north side just after noon Sunday. A security officer working for a nearby church said he saw three teenage boys riding bikes away from the scene in a hurry. The victim was dazed by the attack and wasn’t sure if anything had been stolen from him.

Syphilis cases up in Johnson County

An outbreak of syphilis has been reported in Johnson County. So far, 25 confirmed or suspected cases of the disease have been reported. Most of those infected are in their teens to mid-20s. Syphilis cases have been up in Indiana in recent years, with reported cases jumping from 140 statewide in 2008 to 175 in 2010.

East-side home destroyed by fire

October 2, 2012

Fire destroyed a home near East 21st Street and North Mitthoeffer Road on the east side of Indianapolis late Monday. Firefighters took about 20 minutes to control the blaze, which broke out about 11 p.m. in the 2300 block of Gable Drive. No injuries were reported. Estimated damages were $90,000.

WellPoint to add 100-plus local jobs for new Medicare contract

WellPoint Inc.’s National Government Services unit will add more than 100 jobs in Indianapolis beginning late this year or early next after the health insurance giant won a new contract with the federal Medicare program.

Dow Agro awarded $5.3M in patent-infringement case

The unsuccessful lawsuit filed by a subsidiary of Belgium-based Bayer Bioscience claimed that insect-resistant corn products from affiliates of Dow AgroSciences violated two of its patents.

The Indianapolis Airport Authority is asking a judge to reconsider his decision that paves the way for a Cincinnati-based developer to build a 2,000-space parking lot near the airport.

ISO asking for fewer concessions, sets Saturday deadline

October 2, 2012

Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra executives have given musicians until 6 p.m. Saturday to decide on a contract offer that asks for significantly fewer concessions than previous proposals. But musicians say the offer is unacceptable due to an escape clause.
