Fire destroys warehouse, motorcycles

November 30, 2011

A warehouse fire Wednesday morning in Lawrence heavily damaged a building and about 75 motorcycles stored inside. The blaze, at 46th Street and Franklin Road, started about 1 a.m. The building, which housed a motorcycle repair shop, is one of the oldest buildings in Lawrence. Fire officials said the structure likely will need to be torn down.
 

Man injured when plow hits train

November 30, 2011

A man was injured Wednesday morning in an accident involving a train and a snow plow in Hendricks County. Police said the snow plow was traveling north on County Road 151, west of Lizton. Plow driver Richard Layman, 65, of Danville slowed at a railroad crossing but did not stop, police said, and ran into a train traveling about 45 mph. Layman was taken to St. Vincent Hospital on a medical helicopter to treat leg and arm injuries. County Road 151 was closed following the accident.

Less than a year after raising personal and corporate income taxes, Illinois officials are pushing a $250 million package of tax breaks for several prominent businesses threatening to leave for more tax-friendly states, including Indiana.

Given the steadfast work of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Hoosiers should be predisposed to appreciate Native American art. That’s the hope, at least, as the Indianapolis Museum of Art launches a paid-admission show featuring more than 80 pieces from one of the strongest collections in the country. Phoenix Theatre

The Phoenix serves up sketches, dances and songs by a cast that includes Scot Greenwell, Claire Wilcher and Gayle Steigerwald. But the aspect of the production likely to get attention in the local theater world is that Charles Goad is in the cast. For years, Goad served as Scrooge in the Indiana Repertory Theatre’s “A Christmas Carol” before taking a hiatus from acting to study cooking. Are you sick of my telling you what a wonderful singer Liz Callaway is? If so, sorry, but here I go again. The Broadway (“Miss Saigon,” “Cats”) and cabaret star heard here recently with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and at the Cabaret at the Columbia Club is back, but this time with more opportunities to give a listen. She and her sister Ann Hampton Callaway (also a strong vocal talent) are teaming up to cohost this year’s Yuletide Celebration, which means they’ll be in town the better part of December. Joining the sisters and the ISO will be acrobats from Cirque de la Symphonie. Details here.
