Long-term care a long-term problem for Conseco: Losses mount in spite of huge insurance market

Conseco sells that coverage, called long-term-care insurance. But right now, it wishes it didn’t. The Carmel-based company has been losing millions of dollars a month on long-term-care policies, as the costs of providing care have outstripped the premiums collected. Conseco also is facing lawsuits and an investigation by a congressional committee into whether it wrongly denied customers’ claims under its long-term-care policies. Carmel bank software developer Baker Hill has scheduled a 1 p.m. economic development announcement with Indiana Economic Development Corp. President Nate Feltman. Local entrepreneur Mark Hill and other investors sold Baker Hill Corp. to Experian of Costa Mesa, Calif., in August 2005 for more than $75 million.

Acquisition costs hurt Adesa profit in first quarter

Costs associated with the April 20 acquisition of Adesa Inc. by a group of private equity funds caused first-quarter profit to rise only 3.9 percent, to $38 million, the Carmel-based auto auction reported late yesterday. BioStorage receives $8.3 million in venture capital

Indianapolis-based BioStorage Technologies Inc. said today it has raised $8.3 million in venture capital funding. Led by Radius Ventures of New York, other investors included Spring Mill Venture Partners of Carmel, Village Ventures of Williamstown, Mass., and Twilight Venture Partners of Indianapolis. BioStorage focuses on pharmaceuticals and other biomaterials, and recently expanded into Europe.
