Owners of popular Greek restaurant turning 1920s warehouse into event center

Taki and Jeanette Sawi of Santorini Greek Kitchen, in Fountain Square, are branching out to open a large banquet facility in a nearly century-old warehouse on the southwestern edge of downtown just across the White River and not far from Lucas Oil Stadium.

Overnight blazes keep firefighters busy

October 4, 2013

Indianapolis firefighters battled three fires that broke out between 3 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday. The first damaged a home in the 1100 block of Spann Avenue in the Fountain Square neighborhood. The second destroyed a garage in the 3500 block of North Audubon Road. The third involved possible arson at a vacant house at Shelby Street and Pleasant Run Parkway. No significant injuries were reported.

Group aims to create nation’s largest rugby complex

A long-vacant drive-in theater just east of Fountain Square soon could be home to the nation’s largest rugby facility. The Indiana Youth Rugby Foundation has raised $1.2 million for the ambitious project and is seeking another $500,000 to break ground this spring.

“The Last Waltz” is widely considered one of the best concert movies of all time. A big part of that is because the subject of the film, the announced final performance by The Band—accompanied by a stellar lineup of guests including Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond and Muddy Waters—was a landmark concert. Indiana musicians re-created the concert in a performance last summer at Radio Radio in Fountain Square. For those, like me, who are kicking themselves for missing it, news that the concert is being re-created again, albeit in Bloomington, warrants some road-trip planning. Details here. 

Police seek robbery, rape suspect

November 19, 2012

Police say a man raped a woman after robbing her husband early Sunday morning near the Fountain Square neighborhood. The incident happened in the 1100 block of Laurel Street just before 4 a.m. According to the report, the attacker hit the husband in the head with a stick, “causing a large laceration.” He then took the man’s wallet and hit the wife in the head before raping her. Police are investigating.

One of the unexpected surprises of last season was the intense straight-faced gore fest, a stage production of “Night of the Living Dead” offered by newcomer Acting Up Productions. This year, in addition to a full season of more conventional fare, such as “Our Town” and “Twelfth Night,” the group returns for a follow-up not for the squeamish. Returnees should note the location shift this year to Fountain Square. Details here.

Charges filed against gang members

September 19, 2012

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry said Wednesday that he is filing multiple charges against more than a dozen members of two competing south-side Indianapolis gangs, the “Problem Child Gang” and “Fountain Square Boyz.” Charges range from criminal gang activity to battery and corrupt business influence. Investigators said the gangs are behind a series of crimes, including robberies, drug sales, graffiti and gun crimes. Many of the gang members are juveniles.

Police investigate east-side stabbing

August 14, 2012

Indianapolis police are investigating a stabbing on the city's near-east side. Officers dispatched to the 1600 block of Woodlawn Avenue, near Fountain Square, about 1:45 a.m. found a man suffering stab wounds to his chest. The victim was taken to Wishard Hospital in critical condition. Police said a dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend turned violent, resulting in the stabbing.
