M&I Plaza seeks rebound under different ownership: Struggling downtown tower is about 70-percent vacant

October 27, 2008

Struggling M&I Plaza once again can become a prominent office tower, real estate experts contend, but only if the next owner atones for its predecessor’s mistakes. Local real estate developer Paul Kite Co. had emerged as a top contender to buy the struggling downtown property from Maryland-based CapitalSource Inc., which assumed ownership of the 28-story building in June after foreclosing on a $5 million mezzanine loan. Paul Kite didn’t respond to an e-mail request for comment. But sources say Kite’s…

The 25,000-square-foot expansion in Heritage Industrial Park is projected to result in 54 jobs in addition to the 90 now working in Plymouth. The manufacturer of goggles, earplugs and other […]

INVESTING: Investors’ margin calls accelerated selling spree

October 20, 2008

After a tumultuous and historic couple of weeks, culminating Oct. 10-when stocks dropped 800 points as the market opened-investors stood on the edge of the abyss and stopped selling. Market participants arrived at the conclusion that, over that coming weekend, financial chiefs around the world would do whatever it took to rescue the financial system. And they did, by formulating measures to be undertaken by finance leaders across the globe that are unprecedented and wideranging, from supporting the commercial paper…

Ex-Lilly executives open ‘trials’ clinic: Centurion expects high demand from drug firms

October 20, 2008

A new clinic that is on the cusp of conducting human trials in Indianapolis could distinguish itself as a key player in drug development, not only within the state, but nationally as well. Centurion Clinical Research LLC serves pharmaceutical companies and medical-device makers that need to test their products before they can be approved for widespread use. That first phase, in which healthy people are paid to participate in the overnight studies, is critical in determining the safety and success…

State stocks rally after grim week

October 13, 2008

Stocks in Indiana and across the globe shot higher this morning, wiping out some of the devastating losses of last week, one of the worst in the history of Wall Street. In late morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was up more than 450 points, or 5.5 percent. The S&P 500, meanwhile, had advanced […]

INVESTING: Stocks likely to go lower, but bull run may be near

October 13, 2008

When I was growing up, a bunch of other kids from the neighborhood and I would play touch football on the street in front of our homes. At least once a game, the ball would take a weird bounce, go out of bounds and someone would yell, “do over!” Then we would all line up again and do it over. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Congress just called for a “do over,” but you don’t get them in real life….

October 6, 2008

The woman chosen as president and CEO of the city’s Super Bowl host committee isn’t exactly a household name, but those who hired her think she’ll make Indianapolis the best host city ever. BEHIND THE NEWS: Crisis may reshuffle city’s star stockbrokers

September 29, 2008

Turmoil on Wall Street-including Merrill Lynch’s $50 billion sale to Bank of America Corp.- could throw into play some of Indianapolis’ biggest-producing stockbrokers. Charlotte, N.C.-based Bank of America recognizes the risk and is preparing to roll out retention bonuses for its arsenal of 17,000 brokers, 136 of whom work out of the Indianapolis area. “We have the capacity to do that, and would plan to do something because it’s the crown jewel of the company,” Ken Lewis, Bank of America’s…

Hitting the BIG TIME: ‘Big Joe’ Clark building national rep as investment commentator

September 29, 2008

The Anderson money manager known as “Big Joe” got his start as an independent insurance agent in Lafayette. He had been on the job just two weeks before Black Monday struck Wall Street in October 1987. The market shed more than 22 percent of its value, the largest one-day decline in U.S. history. With no clients and no money, the 20-year-old temporarily left the insurance industry and landed a job at AT&T’s old Western Electric division, helping rewire Ball State…

BEHIND THE NEWS: Veteran builder keeps faith, despite shortage of buyers

September 22, 2008

Paul Shoopman could have sat on the sidelines savoring the fact that he sold his homebuilding firm in 2004, just months before the market began a calamitous slide. But that’s not Shoopman, who’d been building houses since 1971, the year he graduated from high school. His dad loaned him the money for his first lot, and co-signed for the construction loan. Shoopman built Dura Builders Inc. into Indianapolis’ fifth-largest homebuilder before selling it to Los Angeles-based KB Home. A little…

M&I Plaza, only 30-percent occupied, may sell at cut-rate price

September 22, 2008

A local real estate developer has emerged as a top contender to buy the 28-story M&I Plaza–potentially at half the
$50 million price the building fetched a decade ago. Paul Kite Co. confirmed it is in talks with Maryland-based
CapitalSource Inc., which took over the struggling office tower in June after foreclosing on a $5 million
mezzanine loan.

INVESTING: Excessive use of leverage now walloping Wall Street

September 22, 2008

Here’s a well-worn saying about businesses that engage in risky behavior: “You only find out who has been swimming naked when the tide goes out.” If so, we are nearing low tide and the biggest nude beach on the planet is on display in lower Manhattan. These recent events are historic. Lehman Brothers, a 158-year-old firm that survived the Depression and world wars, was forced into bankruptcy due to leveraged bets on subprime securities and risky loans made over the…

Lilly Endowment crawls toward diversification goal: Bear market, low Lilly stock price slow selloff

September 15, 2008

Lilly Endowment Inc. is still on its journey to sell off $2 billion of its Eli Lilly and Co. shares. But after a slow start and a few stops for rest, it may take a little longer to get there than originally thought. The endowment, the single largest holder of Lilly stock, announced its plan to diversify its holdings back in July 2006. For nearly 70 years, the not-for-profit held its wealth almost exclusively in the pharmaceutical company’s stock. So…
