The hotel on the northwest side of Indianapolis will become the Caribbean Cove Hotel & Water Park on June 13 after more than 30 years as a Holiday Inn.

Carmel hotel evacuated by fire

June 6, 2011

A fire forced the evacuation of the Four Points by Sheraton hotel in Carmel shortly before midnight on Sunday. About 60 of the 171 rooms at the hotel at 251 Pennsylvania Parkway were occupied at the time of the blaze, which started when a curtain caught on fire on the fifth floor. The guests were taken to other hotels early Monday morning due to smoke and water damage.
 

U.S. unemployment rises to 9.1 percent on slow job growth

U.S. employers in May added the fewest jobs in eight months, and the unemployment rate inched up to 9.1 percent. The weakening job market raised concerns about an economy hampered by gas prices and the Japanese nuclear disaster.

Arrest made in beating death

May 5, 2011

An arrest has been made in the beating death of a homeless man downtown. Police say 20-year-old Jordan Strickland turned himself in. He's accused of killing Steven McGuire in the loading dock of the Sheraton Hotel near Monument Circle two weeks ago. Strickland was arrested on robbery and murder charges. Detectives are still looking for other suspects.

Manhole explosion closes street

April 27, 2011

Crews are investigating a manhole explosion near the Conrad Hotel in downtown Indianapolis. Firefighters and Indianapolis Power & Light officials say the explosion occurred shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday. People inside the Conrad Hotel heard a loud explosion behind the building in an alley. The manhole cover was blown off and a small fire was visible inside the manhole. During the cleanup, Meridian Street was closed between Washington Street and Monument Circle. IPL said manhole explosions are a “rare occurance” and downtown residents shouldn’t be concerned.
