Commentary CHRIS KATTERJOHN: A world-class weekend in Indy

September 17, 2007

The weekend of Sept. 7-9 was nothing short of world-class here in Indianapolis. I’m not even taking into account the Thursday before, Sept. 6, which featured the Start with Art luncheon in the Convention Center, attended by some 1,200 people. The luncheon kicks off the fall arts season and celebrates the importance of the arts-a theme that will run throughout this column. Later in the afternoon and evening on Sept. 6, our city was the focal point of NFL hysteria…

A&E Special: Heartland: The best of the Fest

October 15, 2007

The Heartland Film Festival opens Oct. 18 with nine days of film screenings and special events. Want some help making your selections? IBJ staff and freelancers previewed most of this year’s offerings. Some of the best are reviewed below. For more reviews-which we will continue to update as the fest approaches-visit the Not Strictly Business section of ibj.com. “Home of the Giants,” dramatic feature Given the generic title (please change it before it’s too late), the Hoosier high school basketball…

The Art of the Blog

December 7, 2007

Welcome to the IBJ A&E corner of the blogosophere—a salon of sorts where arts and entertainment issues large and small, local and national, low-, medium- and high-brow, will be discussed, debated, argued about and wrestled with.

It’s a place I hope…

A&E: Patty melts ‘Yuletide’ hearts

December 10, 2007

It’s been a good number of years since I’ve joined what seems like half of central Indiana at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s “Yuletide Celebration.” That’s no slight to the institution, just a reality of my arts going-I tend to gravitate toward the new experience rather than the familiar. And traditions of any kind are built on familiarity. Which sets me against the flow of concert- and theatergoers this month. After all, December is the time of Nutcrackers, Scrooges and carol-based…

IBJ movie night: “The Savages”

December 17, 2007

If you picked up your tickets to see the preview of “The Savages,” the first IBJ Night at the Movies, please share your thoughts on the film after Monday night’s screening.

And look to “Lou Harry’s A&E” for information on future…

A&E: Lingering effects: The year’s best A&E

December 31, 2007

When I came on board as IBJ’s arts and entertainment editor back in May, I had no idea to what degree critical coverage of Indianapolis’ cultural offerings would be embraced by the publication and its readers. Well, I’m happy to report that the response has been terrific. And so, shortly after this weekly A&E column of reviews began appearing in IBJ, we launched a Thursday e-mail blast of previews and ticket giveaways (sign up for free at www.ibj.com/enews). That, too,…

More closings, some temporary

Permanent Opie piece coming to downtown

January 18, 2008

Good news for fans of Julian Opie’s pop-art-inspired exhibit that ended a year-long run on city streets in September-Indianapolis is getting a permanent piece by the London artist to add to its growing public art collection. The work created for Indianapolis is called “Ann Dancing.” It’s reminiscent of the four-sided LCD display dubbed “Sara Dancing” […]

Reviews, previews, blogs, etc.

February 28, 2008

While this blog has loads of readers (110,000 page visits in January.), I’ve found, anecdotally, that that number includes some who know little about IBJ’s other arts and entertainment coverage.

So I thought I’d take today’s posting and give you a…

A&E: Take your seats: Best of the fest

April 21, 2008

OK, so maybe what follows isn’t the absolute best of the Indianapolis International Film Festival. After all, with 137 movies in the lineup, it would be a full-time job to screen everything being shown at this year’s event, which runs April 23-May 3. However, we did get our eyes on many of this year’s offerings and picked films well worth your festival time. Think of these widely varied films as strong anchors for your IIFF experience this year. Look for…

A&E: ‘Victor/Victoria’ wins despite itself

May 5, 2008

A little bit of history before I get to the specifics of American Cabaret Theatre’s production of “Victor/Victoria”: The movie on which it is based, concerning a woman who finds success-and romantic complications-pretending to be a female impersonator, proved a surprising cinematic hit for actress Julie Andrews and her director/husband Blake Edwards in 1982. Thirteen years later, again directed by Edwards, the movie was turned into a musical for Andrews, who hadn’t been on Broadway since “Camelot” in 1963. The…

Commentary: Indiana State Fair is on a roll

August 18, 2008

Riding a stretch of near-perfect weather, this year’s Indiana State Fair seems destined to break attendance records. I was there for a few hours one day, and I can see why it still is a big draw: The fair is alive with what’s great about Indiana tradition. And, relatively speaking, it’s a cheap form of entertainment. Eight bucks for admission seems more than reasonable in these days when a movie costs you nearly $10, especially when you realize your $8…

Casting magic for “Guys and Dolls”

October 11, 2008

An open letter to Des McAnuff, director of the upcoming Broadway revival of “Guys and Dolls.”

Mr McAnuff,

You don’t know me, but having seen your productions of “The Who’s Tommy,” “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” and “Jersey Boys,”…

A&E: This year’s Heartland highlights

October 13, 2008

This year, IBJ previewed every available Crystal Heart award-winning film competing at this year’s Heartland Film Festival (running Oct. 16-24). Here are our thoughts, with priority picks noted with stars. Look for more reviews of some of the not-in-competition festival films in upcoming IBJ A&E blogs (www.ibj.com/arts). For a full festival schedule, visit www.heartlandfilmfestival.org. “Amal,” dramatic feature A New Delhi rickshaw driver doesn’t realize he’s impressed a billionaire in a film where the richly detailed background is more interesting than…

A&E Lou Harry: Murder most Hoosier

October 27, 2008

Last year, when I commented on Indiana Repertory Theatre’s boiled-down-to-90-minutes production of “Hamlet,” the theater wrote back making clear that the presentation was part of Shakespeare for a New Generation, an initiative sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest. As part of that program, the to-thebone length was mandatory. That explained the “why.” But it didn’t change my reaction to the show as an audience member: It felt more like reading a Classics Illustrated…

Lou Harry’s arts coverage is welcome, insightful

November 17, 2008

Lou Harry’s art coverage is thorough and vital to the community, and IBJ, an overall
interesting read, should remain committed to including arts reviews and news.

Every once in a while, I’ll turn the blog over to reporter Kathleen McLaughlin, who is now covering the arts business beat for IBJ. Welcome her aboard and look for her writing here and in the print edition of IBJ.
