    1. Totally agree John B. If one doesn’t already exist, the state legislature needs to write a new criminal law subjecting parents of juveniles involved in felony crimes to jail time and fines for not controlling their children. I heard some of these juvenile punks were actually driven downtown and dropped off by a parent(s).

    2. Maybe charge them with neglect of a dependent and/or permitting a child to possess a firearm.

    3. Agreed. Parents should be held responsible and face incarceration. One ponders if they should actually ratain custody of [any] children.

      Access to guns is easy.

And for those who were dressed to conceal any personal links to a firearm, unfortunately will likely be released and be free to mastermind other acts of violence — sadly, they will likely not be incarcerated forever.

    4. Mears won’t even prosecute the violent REPEAT offenders, let alone the parents. Wishful thinking.

  1. A “Stay Away Order?” How do you interpret this sentence? “A Stay Away Order is necessary to ensure peace in the community until this cause is disposed of,” the request states. It sounds to me like this 17-year-old will be released soon and back out on the streets to do what he wants to do without any fear of consequences. Maybe I’m just cynical. How does a “Stay Away Order” ensure peace in the community?

    1. how about a ‘don’t shoot anybody else order’? just about as absurd. till this city gets away from the democratic mantra of light on crime it’ll only get worse……..

    2. Our neighborhood association used to ask for stay away orders for prostitutes. The could be arrested for just showing up in the area. They did not have to be caught soliciting. It’s very effective for repeat trouble makers.

    3. this is the 17 year old’s SECOND felony gun charge, and this time in connection with a murder, yet he’ll walk with a warning. There is no justice department in Indianapolis. Reap the benefits of what you voted for.

  2. Maybe the Democratic supermajority on the council can pair their hugely effective* Homeless Bill of Rights, passed in 2015, with a new Teen Thug Bill of Rights. Can’t wait!

    * Effective at utterly trashing our downtown.

    1. Perhaps such concerns could be addressed by citizens who would run for office it is both offensive and sophomoric to allude to the barbaric and outrageous behaviour as condoned by democrats. So, is crime only committed by democrats and no republicans have committed any?

Perhaps one should review the police records of some in the House of Representatives and the White House. Perhaps the savvy GOP should pen a bill to control the proliferation of firearm distribution, or better yet, appropriate funds to adequately staff police forces statewide. Yep, youth everywhere get away too easily with crimes whether the governmental leadership is republican or democratic.

One can harbor the fantasy that a republican city council and mayor would instantly transform Indianapolis into a sanctuary of safety — but it is as unlikely as a reduced federal deficit resulting from the big beautiful bill.

    2. Yes, when a republican Ballard was the mayor, crime and safety were important. Since pothole Joe took over, things have gone to He|| and back.

    3. You can count me in that group. That’s also why I conceal carry practically all the time.

  3. A huge part of the city’s population – and the Dem voter base – are just a massive boat anchor around the neck of society. The party has no interest in throwing the book at this scum or their parents because their own internal political dynamic demands leniency in the name of equity and social justice.

  4. Indianapolis is just falling in line under Hogsett and the Democratic party. We join Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle, St. Louis, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Detroit, Philadelphia, Washington DC, you know………all the good cities that are controlled by Republicans. Oops, I meant Democrats.

    1. Rural America has a *far* greater rate of violent crime per capita than major metros but don’t like that ruin your narrative…

  5. I question if the Mayor, State Gov. and City Council understand the ramifications if this sort of thing continues. What happens to our nationally recognized convention business as well as all of the major national and international sporting events we host if this continues? Think about the loss of revenue!

There has to be a deterrent and accountability for such actions. Why is the 17 year old even on the streets and not in jail after already being convicted of this? Obviously there wasn’t enough punishment to dissuade him from doing it again.

It was said that 100’s of juveniles were out on the streets. Why not implement a curfew that has teeth with a significant deterrent to doing it again such as a month locked up in a Juvenile Detention Center? Word will get around quickly to their friends as to what happens if caught and what happens behind bars.

  6. If the city doesn’t get this mess under control, the downtown businesses will eventually leave. That directly affects
convention business, new hotel business- not withstanding who would want to go downtown for anything…and the city is advocating for a soccer stadium? Perception becomes reality. Clear the streets of juveniles. Don’t have anywhere to take them? City-county council…appropriate the funds so that the police can do their jobs.
