Indiana’s death toll from COVID-19 climbs by 72

The Indiana State Department of Health on Wednesday reported 2,675 new cases of COVID-19, up from 2,130 the previous day, bringing the pandemic total in the state to 976,802 cases.

The department also reported 72 new deaths from COVID, the highest number in the department’s daily report since Sept. 28, when 89 deaths were reported.

The seven-day moving average of new deaths rose from 21 to 23 per day, the health department said. Almost 90% of those who have died of COVID in Indiana are at least 60 years old.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 decreased by one, from 1,879 on Monday to 1,878 on Tuesday. About 23% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds are occupied by COVID patients. Hospitalizations reached a recent peak of 2,687 on Sept. 13.

More than 3.29 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Wednesday at 5 a.m., after a daily increase of 4,547. Department statistics show 59.9% of Indiana residents 18 and older are now fully vaccinated.
