Our airport authority has been a model of forward thinking decisions and good execution. The new terminal continues to rate as excellent even 10+ years after opening. The airport owns land for a potential third runway south of I-70. Etc. This is was local organizations should aspire to be like.
Agreed! Move over city administration, let the Airport Authority manage things!
The wise move would have been to build the planned new fourth runway on greenfield site on the side of the highway for FedEx before upgrading one of two existing main runways to avoid logistical problems and boost airport cargo/warehousing infrastructure for development.
The fact that they did not do this probably suggests that they don’t feel a third parallel runway will be needed anytime soon. Keep in mind, even Heathrow only has two runways. LaGuardia only has two runways. You can pump a lot of flights through the existing runway infrastructure IND has.
Indy’s Airport always impresses me with its forward thinking and planning. Outside of Chicago, maybe Indy could push to be the second regional hub for the great lakes region and beyond. The airport officials might want to lend a helping hand to city leaders on how to run the city like a well oiled machine as well.
