Amenity? Yes, but economic development? Ruoff is a good example. It didn’t exactly bring any economic growth to the area as it took 40 years for the Indy-metro population and sprawl to reach it.
I think “economic development” is a second-order effect: when companies are looking at Shelbyville as a place to locate, the presence or absence of amenities probably makes some difference in the decision making. It certainly seems to matter in announcements about companies locating in Carmel, Fishers, and Noblesville.
Ruoff hasn’t been there for 40 years, and it was well in the middle of the “sprawl” 10 years after it opened. Putting an exact number on the economic development directly brought by the venue is a hard exercise, but it was a big contributor to that area
You should have mentioned the grand daddy of rural amphitheaters, in Rushville. It’s preparing to celebrate it’s 25th Anniversary in 2026, has hosted 6,000 fans and was built for less than $100,000. All the other similar venues in the region have visited it to take notes. And it is only 15 miles further from Indy than Shelbyville.
Thanks for this note.
Note very attractive. Could be a place people love if they can redo and make it look good.
