Someone explain the tax abatements? They bought a company, want to expand and want the tax payers to foot the bill? That money could be better used for the pot holes the added traffic creates.
It’s fairly common practice to retain a major employer. Here’s the key sentence:
“Representatives for the company told commissioners … that without incentives, Heartland would have to reevaluate its plans for the SlimFast brand to make it fit within its existing operations.”
In other words, “give us a tax break or we’ll take our 832 jobs to another city that will”. Company has economic leverage + city wants to retain high-paying jobs = company gets tax incentive to stay. Better to lose some property tax revenue than it is to lose 800+ jobs plus all property, payroll, sales and corporate tax revenue if the company leaves.
It’s corporate blackmail, plain and simple!!!
“at an average wage of $32 per year.”
32 per year? Typo.
