As the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 spreads across the country and people ponder new federal guidelines for masking, the daily numbers for new infections in Indiana have spiked again.

The Indiana State Department of Health on Wednesday reported that 1,248 Hoosiers had been diagnosed with COVID-19, the highest number of daily new infections since 1,438 cases were reported on April 29.

It also said that 12 people in Indiana had died in the latest daily count, harking back to the spring when daily deaths routinely were in double figures.

On Monday, the state said it had averaged zero new deaths per day from COVID over the past seven days. The number of deaths spiked to 15 on Tuesday, and then dipped to 12 on Wednesday. The seven-day average is now 3 deaths per day.

The state’s cumulative death toll is now 13,564.

Hospitalizations rose to 781, up from 735 the previous day. That’s the highest level since May 25, when 810 people were hospitalized in Indiana due to the virus.

Hospitalizations are down from a recent high of 1,019 on May 4. The pandemic-high mark was 3,460, set on Nov. 30.

The state said more than 2.93 million Hoosiers have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. More than 2.91 million had received the first dose of a two-dose vaccination.

Following are the latest COVID-19 numbers from the Indiana State Department of Health. The department updates its data daily based on information received through 11:59 p.m. the previous day. The department no longer issues reports on Saturday and Sunday.

  1. 120% of the cases in unvaxxed, and 135% of the deaths in unvaxxed, but for some reason one of the earliest and most vaxxed countries is going to a third shot …

    1. I’m making fun of the propaganda that 99.9% of the deaths were unvaxxed, when they went back to the first date they were even available, something like January 18. Look at percentages in Britain and Israel and the vaccine is nothing as effective as claimed, 40-60% and dropping, hence the third jab push.

    1. Ryan H,
That is a very inhumane comment. Although I am vaccinated, I care deeply to protect all others… all others. Children under 12 are not eligible for vaccinations. Some of them could have compromised immune systems. Think twice before making such insensitive comments.

    2. So you are masking up for all the 12 year old and under Americans that have died from Covid-only symptoms? Is there actually one American under 12 that has died from Covid?

    3. The stats about childhood mortality are not very well reported, to be sure. It is true that children are at a significantly lower risk…but that risk is not zero. You ask if even one child has died of Covid? The answer is yes. I could not find anything more recent than April, but as of that time the number of child deaths was about 300. Three months later, of course, that number would be at least a little bit higher. So yes, children die of Covid. Not often, but far more than zero. Does that help strike any feeling of compassion for you?
