Statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations, cases climbing again

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 have risen more than 20% over the past 10 days, with increases seen in four of the past five days, according to statistics from the Indiana State Department of Health.

Hospitalizations rose from 1,376 on Sunday to 1,468 on Monday, the highest number since Oct. 19. COVID patients occupy 16.2% of Indiana’s intensive care unit beds.

The department on Tuesday reported 2,830 more cases of COVID-19, increasing the pandemic total to 1,058,379. The moving average of daily cases has climbed from 1,659 at the beginning of the month to 2,517.

Just more than 3.4 million Hoosiers had been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as of Tuesday at 5 a.m. after a daily increase of 2,130. Meanwhile, more than 606,000 Hoosiers have already gotten vaccine boosters.

The health department reported 42 more COVID-19 deaths in the state, raising the total to 16,577.

The department said 59.8% of Indiana residents 18 and older are fully vaccinated.
