Most of the area’s largest car dealers are being sued for charging document-preparation fees that appear to violate state law. But Indiana lawmakers just passed a bill to the governor that would legalize the practice.
The decision will affect two dealerships in the Indianapolis area: Bob Rohrman’s Indy Suzuki and Used Car Superstore and the Ray Skillman Westside Auto Mall, both of which sell new Suzuki vehicles.
In exchange for donating $1 million to Center Grove schools so athletes don’t have to pay a new participation fee, local auto dealer Ray Skillman gets to post advertising signs on several athletic facilities, scoreboards and concession stands.

Used-car prices are on the rise. Last month, the average used-car transaction was for $19,345 vs. $16,586 a year earlier, according to Edmunds.com. Last year, used-vehicle prices generally were 10 percent to 15 percent higher than in 2009.
